Waterton Lakes May Long Camping
With the next 5 days off, we left Calgary Wednesday night for Waterton Lakes. The park is roughly 3.5 hours drive from Calgary, so we stopped in Claresholm for some food. They happened to be having a small classic car meetup at the A&W across from the Sunset Motel.
A man, who introduced himself as ‘Don of Don’s Barber Shop’, was there with his 1927 Model T. It appeared he had strange fascination with… Global TV; apparently, he had been featured recently.

Once in Waterton, we began our short drive down the narrow dirt road towards the ‘Belly River’ camp ground.
After setting up camp we took a short walk down to the nearby creek to take some photos of the amazing view of the stars that night.
We woke the next morning with low level clouds and light rain, so we decided to head into town. On the drive there we stopped along the deserted highway to take some photos.

After arriving in town, we parked at nearby trail head and began hiking a random trail. With the cloud cover so low, we ended up having to turn back once visibility became too low.
We stumbled upon a bible camp near the bottom that seemed deserted. We quietly borrowed there bathroom hoping nobody came bursting out of one the cabins screaming for us to leave.

After driving back to our camp site we decided to have a few drinks and walk around. We came across this sign in a nearby field. …NO driving with hats.

We both nearly fell over when we startled this pheasant which make seemed to fly out of nowhere. Pheasants do not equal bears.
On our way back, we come across a bend in the river and decided to sit down at the edge of the bank. As Jimmy relaxed and looked out onto the amazing view we had, he was unaware of the literally 1000′s of ants he had just sat in.
His expression quickly changed as he looked down the invading army crawling towards his face. I could barely stand I was laughing so hard; we both just kept wildly trying knock off as many as we could. Jimmy was never the same…. Jimmy doesn’t like ants now…. The next morning we delayed getting up, hoping that sound of rain on the tent would eventually stop. When it finally did, we opened the tent to find that the reason the sound had stopped was that it had actually just turned to snow.
We decided to again drive into town to hopefully pass the time somewhere warm. We ended up talking our way into one of the pool/gym areas of hotel. We spent the morning relaxing there until the sun came out. Despite the snow earlier, the day was turning out to be pretty nice weather wise. We drove up to the hotel on the edge of the lake and took some photos.
We then walked down the ridge to the water’s edge to get a different vantage point.
Once we finished up at the lake, we drove over to the nearby Bison Paddock, which has a long narrow road that snakes through out it in loop allowing you to drive through. About half way around the loop, we spotted some bision by the fence but they were too far to get a good shot without leaving the car and leaving us too exposed. We got back in the car and drove out of the paddock and stopped on the highway near the fence and walked towards where we saw the bison. One baby bison had somehow escaped and was on the wrong side of the fence with us. We couldn’t get close without spooking him, so there wasn’t much we could do to get him back inside.

After getting back to camp we played some frisbee as the sun set over the ridge in the distance.

Late that night other friends arrived and attempted to setup their tents in the dark.
The next morning we arrived in town in time for the 10:00am ferry that takes you to the trail head for the famous ‘Crypt Lake’ hike. A short 20 min later we had arrived at the dock .
We crossed a few waterfalls on the way towards the top but due to some snow gullies we had turn back. We were the first group of people to attempt crypt lake this season which is why the snow was still so deep. Without rope or an ice axe it was unsafe to cross the frozen stretch. We attempted to hike around it but without a definite idea of where we were going, we just ran out of time and had to head back down.

Once we arrived back at the dock we had an hour or so to kill, so Jimmy decided he would jump in the ‘glacial fed’ lake.
Jimmy gave the impression that it was …. not warm.
While we were on the dock watching Jimmy risk a heart attack, a squirrel watched from the beach as it plotted…..
I came back to the beach to find him INSIDE my backpack.

He had literally…. **** in my backpack, then stole a M&M. Not cool Squirrel… not cool.

After we got back we, played catch with the football for a while before packing up and leaving to go home.

Thanks for visiting my blog today, glad you did..you’ve got so many inspiring images from these trips, that it’s impossible not to get fired up. This is what being in the mountains is all about!
Love Waterton…Have you ever camped on Payne Lake…so miraculous…thanks for sharing…Smooches to you Alberta folk xxoo
These shots are amazing. The starry sky is so well captured and I love the black and white one of your friend reclining on the jagged rocks. Each one tells a great story. Shame about the squirrel…or is that a chipmunk??
Wow, I love the picture of the purple starry sky!
One word: WOW!
HI! I AM SO IMPRESSED WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY. WOW! You just followed my blog and I have to admit I am not a hiker by any means, so after my posts on my Meru it’s back to my regular life in Tanzania. However, thanks for following – and glad I stumbled upon yours as well. Cheers!
Some amazing shots here … I think the M&M thieve is very cool .. cool enough to sit still while you’re taking a photos. Brilliant. The water doesn’t even look the slightest warm … but if you are a viking you’re a viking. Like the photos in black & white .. the endless road and I like the one with the lake with the clear water .. and of course the M&M guy.
These are some of the most amazing shots I’ve ever seen. Wow. Some of these are simply brilliant.
Great shots, bet that water was nippy ! Looks like it was a memorable hike with fun along the way.
WOW!!!!!!!!! Not sure there is much more than can be said! I felt like I was there. Interestingly enough…My favorite shot is the Motel sign. : ) Loved it! On my bucket list, there is an entry called “become a better photographer” – Your pictures are those that I can only take in my dreams!! What kind of camera do you use? Scott

Wow, I don’t have any words. I think your works is fantastic..but that word doesn’t even describe it! They are all so beautiful & really capture the moments. I am literally a fan & follower now. ^_^ And thanks for liking my latest post!
You pictures are incredible. I haven’t gone hiking in 10years, last time I went I was 12. I definitely want to try it out again, it looks awesome
I’ve gotta say the Frisbee shot with the sunset in the background has got to be my favorite. Great Photo’s!
Did anyone say that they don’t really do nature so they will experience it vicariously through your photos, which are stunning and fun? I just said that.
Amazing pictures you have there of the stunning scenery & hiking trails. Is it bad that I laughed so hard when I saw the little squirrel in your backpack and later stuffing his face with that
M & M? It’s quite ridiculous that the little guy has to get his sugar fix that way!
That dang squirrel..! How does one explain the strength, vision, clarity, realism of your photographs with a story line that will never leave my photographic and reading memory. It made me feel like when Earth knew no pollutants. Fatherland filtering it’s hydro for vegetation and evolution… The water shots just floored me along with how the pictures made you feel like you were looking at a ten foot screen. How’d Arnold say it, I’ll be back! To tag along on your next and previous ventures. L
OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! It’s no wonder why wordpress have you as recommended travel blog.
Amazing photos…all the more amazing since the closest I will get to a campsite is thru your fabulous photos. You have gained a follower…can’t wait for more. I’m sorry about your backpack bit the squirrel pics were worth it>
Wow! I love all the pictures! I would have to save the large black and white one with you walking away….maybe even frame… stunning!
Echoing everyone else – amazing, fantastic, hilarious and plain old fun – thanks for sharing. I think I’ll asmuse myself for the next week or so interchanging the images as background on my office PC.
I’m sure you get this a lot but the photos are so fantastic! Every single photo is so beautiful. And the squirrel is cute (though he made your bag his toilet and he stole the M&Ms. Still – he’s a cutie.
Wow! The fourth picture is so breathtaking! Thank you for sharing and have a nice day (:

I love your blog and your pictures but I checked the email response and I am getting hundreds of your email replies. Note to self never do that again.
Hundreds of email replies from my site at http://www.ising4God.com? If so, I need to raise a beef with WordPress and I’m very sorry!

You guys are the best! Your photos are awesome.. (wish mine of Waterton Lake turned out that nice!) and you tell a story with a great sense of humor. Your blog is an incredible mix of serious photography and writing, combined with humorous inserts.
But no bears? I saw a grizzly by the highway, just to the side of the hotel 4 years ago. I know they’re there!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Your photos are incredible! I have to admit I particularly love the squirrel with his m&m filling his little mouth, he just screams naughty. I also really love the serene lake with the long pier. Wow.

I’m sure other comments have expressed this sentiment… your photos make me want to pack my bags and head to Canada to hike in the mountains…
Your photographs are stunningly beautiful. You certainly seem to have a talent for taking a naturally stunning setting and communicating it to those of us who are yet to travel to those parts of the world yet. I will certainly be stopping here often for some arm chair travel, and inspiration. I’m sorry but I love that squirrel! What a cheeky little creature! And what good taste in snack foods he has
Wow! Those are some stunning pictures. You country is so beautiful. I wish I could come with you on one of your hiking adventures. xx
Exquisite photographs. So happy you chose to follow my blog so I could happen upon yours. My father was just speaking this summer of how much he would like to plan a trip to Glacier National park with a hop over to the Canadian Rockies. Can’t wait to share these photos with him. I don’t think we could rough it as expertly as you and your crew have done here but if you have any recommendations for starting point cities to fly into (we are from the East Coast), lodges, or tour companies for a first trip, I would love to get your input!
Patrick, Thank you for visiting my blog. Your photography is amazing!!! I especially love the landscapes. Have a great day! ~Patricia

I love the bit about the squirrel, so funny. Snow in June? I’m sorry, I know very little about the weather in Canada. That park must be at a pretty high elevation! I look forward to reading more from you.

Beautiful photography of a gorgeous part of the world. I’ve been to Glacier National Park on the US side but have never been to Waterton Park yet. My mom grew up in Calgary, met my dad in the States and moved here. I still have relatives there and in Nanton and points north of Calgary as well. Thanks for visiting my blog and deciding to follow it. I think I’ll be following yours as well.
Tori
Wow, gorgeous photos. LOVE the ones of the cheeky squirrel! I lived in Canada (Lake Louise) for just under a year and you’ve just made me desperately want to go back!
No wonder we never meet many Canadians. Why would they want to leave home?
What a fantastic blog, looks like so much fun and some amazing photos.
Awesome pictures! Really, really beautiful!
Reblogged this on HakesPlace.
I love the spirit you have for your passion. Your shots are beautifully composed (even the spontaneous one of the heart-stopping glacial dip). My favourite shot was your friend hiking up a hill in the deep overcast. It looks like one of those “inspiration” photos used for motivation, like “Keep going even if you can’t see your goal.” Sharing adventures, or knowledge with the cyberworld is educational, and your blog combines fun, adventure, knowledge, companionship and a love of photography. I really enjoyed view it.
Thank you so much for visiting our blog, Kind Art, today. I live with two avid, avid hikers and outdoors men, so I know your passion for hiking. As an artist, I completely understand your love of photography! What a joy it is to find someone who combines their loves into one endeavor. I have explored Waterton quite a few times as well as Glacier. It is so beautiful up there and my experiences there every time have brought me to close proximity with bears – black and grizzlies, both. The hikers at my house rounded a curve in a trail one day and there was a female grizzly sitting right on the trail! Their hearts pounded a bit quicker, I can tell you. They understood each other and went their separate ways, but it was not without a bit of angst. Your photos are stunning and your storytelling is really very funny, too. I laughed out loud several times reading this post. Keep photographing those areas very few have the opportunity to explore, because you just may convince a few people to make some serious changes in how they live their lives if they understand the beauty of these areas. Oh, also please come back and visit us more. Sign up for our email postings, too! We would love your input and to have you hanging around. Peace, Kim ( http://kindartsavetheworld.wordpress.com/ )
The photography is INCREDIBLE. Thank you for sharing
I look forward to more!

So beautiful. I want to go there! (Only I’ll zip up back against squirrels.) Especially liked frisbee photo. k.
Stunning photographs. Beautiful work. Emm, the Squirrel probably thought your backpack was the traveling convenience store. He just popped in to use the restroom and pick-up a candy.
I just have to say, I really enjoyed reading your thread of events while looking at your pictures. Gorgeous shots with a very light hearted story. Loved it! Thanks for sharing
.

Obviously as you can see from the responses above, you have a GIFT. Great, great pictures. The 5D is amazing, eh? In my industry we shoot a lot of B-Cam (an now more and more A-Cam footage) with 5D’s. Anyway… Canada is so gorgeous sometimes is makes me wonder why the heck I am stuck down here in NYC! Keep up the great work – your passion shines through!
Gorgeous photos! Thanks for following me. I will enjoy the view from your lens!

That picture with the stars is UNREAL. I am so jealous. I live in LA.. I think I’d have to drive a hundred miles to see more than 5 stars. :/ The ambient light is terrible!

Would love to enjoy more pictures from you!! (and hopefully I can share the same from here…. ).

Hello fellow,
Thanks for the follow, everyone has pretty much said everything that I could say about your photos! But I am here to ask you if you would like to expose your photography within Australia, I would love to use some of your photos on my website I am developing as it will fit perfectly within the genre. They’re magnificent photos and I would love to help you gain reputation over here as compensation. If you’re interested I would love to hear back from you.
Thanks Again and looking forward to seeing more photos,
LFB

Never imagined Canada to be that beautiful. I’m always at the Boundary Waters, never gave much thought to going farther North–maybe this year that will change.

You folks ok out there? Been a while since your last post..~~
I haven’t read all the comments (there are far too many!) so I’m sure this has been said before – what a wonderful, inspiring collection of photographs. I started a mental list of the ones I particularly liked but there were too many so I gave up!

breathtaking. simply breathtaking. thanks for sharing. makes me want to get outside.
Thoroughly stunning photographs; some of the best I’ve ever seen and it looks like a terrific life that you’re living, too.
Beautiful photography. Looks like a really amazing place!
I LOVE your photos – gorgeous! My favorites are the one of your friend curled up and leaning on the jagged rocks, and the one catching the frisbee. But all are wonderful. I didn’t realize how cold Waterton Lakes area still is in May. I guess that explains why the lake water was so frigid when I swam there in mid-July!
I love the Jimmy pictures jumping all free spirit into the water and then having a heart attack on the dock and then … the squirrel. Seeing your pictures inspires me to do more Great Outdoor adventures. I’m gonna have to put some more pennies in the bank. GREAT Pictures. MUY nice. I’m so glad I stopped by your blog and I thank you for coming by mine to visit
I really like that image of you(?) hiking away from the camera at a distance. It’s very good. Next time to Glacier I’m definitely crossing the border. Just have to remember to bring along the passport next time. Great candids and scenics.
Best set of photgraphs I have seen folr a long time. May I use your stars as my desktop background. Take care. Ralph
Hi, your photos are spectacular (especially the M&M loving squirrel). I used to live near Calgary and you have really captured the beauty of the landscape around there. I never got to Waterton Lakes even though we often thought of going. Now I know what I missed. Thanks for following my blog, it allows me to see your excellent photography!
I envy you guys camping. My days of camping are over. The last time we did it, we were miserable. You may not believe but this actually happened on our last outing. While we were away, they forgot to put the chocolate mints on our pillows at the Ritz Carlton. In my opinion, that’s bad camping.
You captured some amazing images!
Wow! Amazing photos! So much to learn from your adventure and photography. Thanks for following my blog.
Super blog and awesome portrayal of Waterton – and your trip. Love your images! I’m surprised there’s no bear shots. I alway see a couple when I’m down there.
I love this. The writing and photos really touch my inner core. Wish I were there!
I am so in love with your photographs… the best thing about them is the fact that your “point of view” about every single click is so clear and unique…. absolutely stunning pictures… My favourite’s the one with the single chair at the end of the pier….
Amazing photos and story. Love that squirrel.
It’s hard to select a favorite shot from this post, but I think it would have to be the photo from the edge of the lake after you walked down from the ridge. Great mix of beautiful landscape and “capture the moment” shots, makes for an enjoyable read. I look forward to following your hiking travels (and thanks for your “like” of my Free Spirit post).
Your pictures are amazing!
Wonderful photographs.
Thank you for ‘following my blog. I too have liked yours and am following it with immediate effect.

I absolutely love the naughty squirrel story!! haha!! Btw, what kind of camera are you using? Photos are breath taking!
Excellent images. Wow. What camera are you using? I am looking to replace my heavier Canon with something more suitable for packing.

That star photo is really stunning, but I think my favorite must be that first photo taken at the water’s edge. I wish I could snap my fingers and be transported there. Thanks for sharing, and for stopping by my own blog, too.
Don’t you know squirrel etiquette? It was just trading poo for the m&m… give and take…a fair trade in squirrel terms!

Please how do I stop getting email notifications from this post. It is too many. Good post really but help!
You must’ve click the “Notify me of follow-up comments via email” box. It is at the bottom of all the comments. Go there and unclick it so the notifications stop. You may want to do that with all other posts you are getting notifications from
Thanks Support told me, I had looked everywhere. I so appreciate your help.
Oh and once i knew how, I did do it with the others I had done that with. Again thank you.
No worries. Glad you found the solution. I can imagine how overwhelming it must be to get 500 notifications or so

I live in Alberta and shamefully have never been….I need to get there. I will remember to leave my hat in my pack (ha, no driving with hats on…funny stuff). Your photo’s are so amazing…I wish I had a giant screen, like those old slide showsl Click Click…gasp! Fancy the Crypt Lake photo at the dock, Cheers. Would it be ok to PIN the M&M chomping squirrel onto my personal Pinterest board? It’s a good way to get visitors back to your site! Thank’s for the tour, enjoyed it immensely.

I’m in love with that star photo, and many of the others. You’re an amazing photographer! So glad you stopped by my blog so I could discover yours. I recently visited Glacier National Park (http://photographicrhodes.wordpress.com/2012/07/29/one-of-the-most-beautiful-places-on-earth/) and we spent a few hours at Waterton International Peace Park – is that the same place you were in these photos? One of your photos reminds me of one I took of the lake behind Prince of Wales hotel.
I’m glad you stopped and looked at my blog! I am new at this and its great to know others are interested

You’re photos of the squirrel are of great help to me as I illustrate a children’s story I wrote. Thanks! Beautiful pictures.
We were due to come to Canada for a trip this year, and now we’re not. After seeing your photo’s I’m even sadder about that! Hmm, send that cheeky squirrel over here to Australia ….. we have a few little creatures of our own that can probably sort him out. Although, peanut m&ms are delicious!! Thanks for following my blog – very glad you found me.
Amazing scenery, and fantastic photos. It looked like a fun trip.
Oh man I think that squirrel may have snagged more than one m&m haha

Your work is so amazing! Thank you for following my blog. It hardly compares to what you are doing. I miss being out in the wilderness. It has been way too long since I have been on a kayaking trip. Thank you for following my blog. Your photos are stunning!
Amazing photos.
Your photos are simply amazing and beautiful!
Gorgeous stuff! My hopes can only remain hopes at the moment that I one day create pics this good.
This is the most beautiful, captivating and inspiring blog I have ever read. I have been feeling the need to take on such adventures in my life and you have made it look so exciting and thrilling. I was filled with joy as I looked at your incredible photographs too. The cave images were frightening as I am slightly claustrophobic, so crawling on my belly is out for me. Well done and thanks for inspiring me to explore life and the world that bit more.
Hilarious account! Proving that travel adage, the most difficult trips make the best stories. (Not that this was your worst trip by any means, but almost anything in it would have easily been my worst trip. Especially loved the bison, the squirrel, the brisk dip in the GLACIAL lake, the ants —
and you’re quite right, a pheasant does not equal a bear. Luckily.
Some great shots of the Canadian Rockies (so much more photogenic than the US). Especially fine starscape shot. And thanks for dropping by my blog.
Quite the adventure, my friend, great mix of photos– thanks for letting me tag along! : )
Awesome ohotographs
Thank you so much for liking my post… otherwise I would never have discovered your amazing blog. Your photographs are amazing and it really feels like we’re on these trips with you, without the hassle of thieving squirrels.
Driving with hat on can be extremely dangerous…
Fantastic blog you have here, perfect mix of awesome scenery and “behind the scenes” to your adventures.
Hi Patrick
Thanks for your visits to soulsnet. I do appreciate it. I would like to share one of your photographs from the Waterton Lakes series in tomorrow’s soulsnet post if that is ok. I will link back and credit etc.
What a beautiful place you live in and what a great time you and your friends are having. Even I, poor photographer though I am, have been inspired to look at the world in a different way now I am taking photos for the blog. Yours are great! How did you learn to take them?
Have fun
Corinne

it took me forever to get to this little reply box, but it was worth it. your photos are amaaaaaaazing! I loved the night sky one and then saw the shot of the river/lake? and was like “no, no, this is awesomer” (yes that’s a word). But then…the squirrel! Hilarious! Coming from New Zealand I hadn’t seen a squirrel until I got to the UK and fell in love. Living in Canada was even better as we were right next to a park with tons of them flitting about the place. They weren’t pooing in back packs or stealing mm’s though…you got lucky
Beautiful photos in this album as well as the rest.
These photos are truly stunning!! I can’t stop flicking through. Amazing! How long have you been doing photography? I’d like to do a course or something x
We love Waterton Lakes. It is so beautiful and uncrowded. Thanks for the great pics.

I’ve never been to Canada, but it’s so beautiful – and the landscape is so similar to Montenegrin mountain lakes! Love it!
Very Beautiful pictures. Loved them.
The pictures are great, it make me want visit canada to see it for myself.

Wow! These are gorgeous photos! I especially love the starry night and the crystal clear lake, but the uncool squirrel is right up there. I loved reading your story. Why didn’t we have this much fun camping when I was a little girl?
Beautiful pictures. I love the ones of just everyday life on the hike–reminds me of my backpacking trips! Thanks for like liking my last post at The Preface. Have a groovy day.
