Trail
This trip was back in 2011 but I did not have a blog at the time, so I thought I would post the photos and story.
There had been a HUGE snowfall that year and the recorded snow depth for Chester lake was something like 2 meters. It was so high that, at points, it was nearly covering the trail markers which were attached to tall posts.

As we made our way through the trees, we noticed that many them had this mossy fluff wrapped around their branches. So obviously the first thing you would do with something like that is….

‘Chester Lake’ is 3.6 km into the loop and once we arrived it was a little anti-climactic, as the lake was hidden under meters of snow. If you didn’t know any better, you would have just thought it was a clearing. We took a few pictures while having lunch at the ‘lake’.
A little disappointed with the view at the lake we decided to follow a trail that seemed to continue on past the lake and up a small hill. Once we made it past trees, we came across these amazing giant boulders covered in a meter of snow. The whole scene was very surreal.

On the way back to the trail head I spotted a creek that was meandering its way through the meters of snow.

Patrick once again beautiful shots, the snow so pristine/untouched with the mountain back-drop stunning. Loved the moss mo too
My dreamscape. I love snow! I’m winter woman! Hopefully I can move to somewhere cold.

This looks so amazing! Thank you for visiting my blog. My boyfriend and I are thinking about visiting North America next year and doing a bit of hiking. Making me want to go so badly now
Excellent and atmospheric.
Just looking at these photos gives me such a wonderful sense of adventure. I know that you say you were disappointed with the view at the lake, but that vertical face of rock is really stunning. Makes me feel very small with such spectacular sights!
Hi Patrick,
So many beautiful images! And, wow, what a landscape up there! Thanks for sharing the “cool” pix–it’s made the last dregs of summer a little more bearable down here. BTW, have you considered using some kind of tag cloud or other quick access device for navigating on your site? Maybe you can place it closer to the top? The individual posts are rather long so its tricky finding different things and there is so much great stuff to see!!! Just my two cents (American or Canadian!)
Stunning shots! I love the creek in the snow
Superlative photographs – technically spot on, but they also show research in getting the absolutely right angle…and the location…superb!
Beautiful work. Not being afraid of heights appears to be an inspiring thing!
Your scenic photos are just incredible – literally breathtaking! I like that you always put in the human element though. The photos of your friends are fantastic too!
These photos are incredible, and I swear I’ve run across this blog before.
Thanks for the ad. I’ll be stopping by myself more from here on out.
Gorgeous photos as always, and this looks like so much fun! I have been wanting to get into snowshoeing for a while now. This makes me want to even more.
The b&ws are breathtaking. Really beautiful photography. The mustache, brilliant!
STUNNING images and vistas… Those skies are amazing. And the snow, of course…
Amazing pics! I just love the black and whites, just stunning
I can feel the clear cold air in those images, beautiful series. Thank you for sharing them.
Patrick – You got a little Ansel Adams thing going on there, don’t ya? Awesome, truly awesome.
Beautiful! I always wanted to try snowshoeing but never got around to it! This winter for sure!
Amazing!
You know your job. Bravo!
My jealousy knows no bounds. Your photography makes me want to up and drop my lame academic life and return to the wilds of Canada. 1 way ticket to THERE, please!
I wish I could comment on specific photos but because I can’t I just want to say that the 3rd to last and the last photo are my favorite!
The b&w looking up the cliff face is INCREDIBLE.
These photos are fantastic!
Awesome photos! You do an excellent job keeping the subtle definition in the snow while maintaining beautiful skies. Really nice stuff.
Isn’t God’s creation just AMAZING???!!! Great job capturing these scenes on photograph. And I like your idea of people being able to buy the pics via your site! So interesting…would be curious to know how you set that up. Certain program?
Never thought about doing black & white during winter, it looks great!! love the pictures and thanks for all the likes
– Francis

In four million years, and a multitude of successive lifetimes, you wouldn’t catch me out on that trail.
But I am certainly glad that YOU did, and brought back such magnificent photos for the rest of us.
With the heat of the summer still nipping (dripping) at my heels, these shots of the snow are so soothing. Thanks!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Gorgeous pics you have here!
These photos remind me of my first hiking trip ever in a February (many years ago) in the Cascades of Washington State. The views I saw were not this spectacular, but I remember how cold I felt from looking at your wonderful photos. Thank you for bringing back that memory.
Oh my gosh. Your photos truly inspire me. With trying to get used to having Bipolar disorder, just getting out the house is a challenge at the moment! To go on one of your hikes , well, if I could achieve that one day. . . it would make me so happy and proud to say the least. Thank you x
Awesome pictures Patrick! And the moustache photo is hilarious lol.
Beautiful photography, as always. Where do you guys find the time to go on all these amazing hikes? Each one is like an expedition on it’s own. And thank you for dropping by the blog again!

~Charlotte
A beautiful set of images.
Wow! Brilliant photos. I envy you guys the scenery, temperate climate and hiking trails. It’s so hot and humid here that you’ll melt with every step. Besides the highest point we have is our 163.63m hill.
Still proud of this place I call home, but definitely no enviable hiking trails here. Thanks for the like on “Noisy thoughts, Silent words…” in my blog. Will be back.
Brrrr!!! Everything is so snowy and white.
Absolutely stunning photos, you’ve really got an eye for a perfect picture.
I just wanted to thank you as well for taking the time to look around my words, it means a lot, so thanks and happy hugs your way!
I checked out your website on smugmug also. Your photos are really good, bit of an understatement I know. Anyway, I think you should consider offering them for sale also as digital downloads on smugmug.
Mmmm… Makes me homesick. Thanks for providing an escape to this desk-ridden receptionist!

but your pics of snow are really beautiful, I have to admit it
I accidentally found your other web page. Most amazing photos. The abstracts are my favorite.
Incredible…. I’m definitely envious that you live even remotely close to such beauty! I drove through Canada on the alcan highway going to Anchorage a few years back… Canada redefined the color green for me. I miss it!!!! Excellent shots…especially the mustache.

The untouched snow looks so beautiful. Lovely photos!
you are crazy talented! inspiring to see these
Mind boggling landscapes! As a nature fanatic and a hobbyist photographer, they are certainly inspiring. But BRRR.
Seriously awesome photos! There are many pictures of the American Rockies, Yosemite, Yellowstone and such, but so much less of the lovely Canadian wilderness. In 50 years, such scenes may be far less magnificent.
Incredible photos and great blog!
Staggering images.
Follow you back … Lovely to blog meet you
awesome, really, really awesome photos! thanks for stopping by and following my blog. now YOU have ME following yours
Keep wheels on, Patrick. You was born as photographer. You shoot as it is, and it’s makes high price of your work. Don’t do color correction as others like to do and spoil natural view. I never been in your country. I remember the descriptions of nature only from books, by Jack London. If I get a project, I’ll visit your country and you too. Maybe you should create an exhibition or you had? I like you job.

Beautiful photographs!!! (And thanks for checking out my blog!!

such a joy to come across your page. i’ll tell you an embarrassing secret: i’ve never been to the snow. well, nothing like this. i’ve never seen snow lay on top of rocks like icing, or creeks power their way through snow as if battling to be the superior element (even though…they’re the same element?). quite impressive. you have, yet another, jealous follower!
Beautiful
Your photos are beautiful!
Absolutely stunning photos
Patrick. Hard to know where to start. You are an AMAZING photographer. Glad I found your work. Keep it up!
I wanna play! The scenery is beautiful…looks like a blast!
The moss fluff photo doesn’t hide the beauty behind…
Not simply awesome, EXTREMELY AWESOME! I never climbed in the Rocky Mountains until I was 17 and never saw real (deeep) snow till I was 18. Grew up in Florida (warm and flat with WATER!) Your shots make me wish I was young again, and able to explore this arctic region, and snow sports. It is a world as alien to me as Mars. I love it! Thank you sooo much!!!
At this point, its redundant for me to say, but your photos are amazing. Seriously.
Great photos man, cannot wait to get skiing again after flicking through these
Beautiful !!!!
)))

Wow, such breathtakingly beautiful scenery, and it looks so peaceful as well. Your photos are amazing – makes me want to go there and start hiking right now!
Beautiful photos! I especially love them because they combing my two favorite activities, hiking and snowshoeing.
Nancy
Hello! Thanks for reading my blog! I loved checking out yours, too. Your photos are stunning, particularly the photos of the beach towards the end of this post, and I love the anecdote about eating the raw brownie mix. You have inspired me to do that trail whenever I make it to Canada!
I used to visit beautiful mountain places like this. My life has changed. It is still a good life, but I may not ever again be able to visit these places. Thank you, from deep in my heart, for filling a void and bringing me joy. — Aggie (And thanks for following the Daily OOMPH! Otherwise, I would never have found you.)
Amazing photography! Pristine snow, beautiful scenery, light…couldn’t ask for anything better.
I actually snowshoed there with my hubby last Valentine’s. Gotta say…my pics don’t exactly look like this.
Love your work! I’ve hiked Chester Lake in the summer as well and it’s gorgeous at that time. A little more of the view you look forward to at the end of a hike.
Photos like these give me some much needed hint of natural beauty. I’m ready to begin travelling again soon.
your pictures are so inspirational

What beautiful photographs and amazing snow scenes!
Your photos are all wonderful and fun to peruse. I love the Kananaskis, there’s just nothing like them–Looks like you had much better snow than we did here in Colorado last winter!
beautiful photography, you have a great eye! thanks for the armchair hike, i have fibromyalgia so couldn’t even get out of a car into snow like that, but i feel like i was there…you have a gift! in the previous post,Vancouver/Nootka Island, the shot of the buoys in the trees reminded me of the installations i make, i was looking to see who the artist was till the penny dropped! it was like being in a kim stanley robinson novel, great stuff! thanks again!
Great set of photos! I just looked at these a second time and noticed the location: Highway 1 going west from Calgary. On our way out of town during our honeymoon cross country and back camping trip (summer of 1971), we got stuck in a terrible traffic jam. Bumper to bumper we crawled until we got to the cause. High school students, on behalf of the city, were taking a one page both sides survey on “What can we do to improve the traffic conditions in our town!”
Stunning photos! And, I love the moss-stache…
Patrick, first thanks for liking my blog entries. I am very new to blogging so you encouragement helps me. So I had to stop by and check what you were up to and o boy what a great surprise! You are an amazing photographer! The pics are just beautiful!
