Vermilion Lakes
Directions
Vermilion Lakes is a short 5 minute drive NW of Banff. Take Mount Norquay Rd from downtown towards Highway 1. Then turn left at Vermilion Lakes Drive.
Story
This is another older photo but I thought I would share it on here. I had the idea for this for sometime but could never find the right location. One day while driving down by the vermilion lakes with my brother, I finally saw the perfect area for it. It took probably 10-15 tries of my brother walking down the dock at varying speeds. In the end what worked best was having him take one step every 10 seconds and then wait 5 seconds between steps. There is no Photoshop trickery in this image, other then the black and white conversion. This was also shot right at dusk to allow for longer exposures.

This is stunning.
beautiful image as always…
This is very cool. Hauntingly cool. I might have to get this.
What an extraordinary photo Patrick! A ghost like figure – hate to sound macabre but to me I feel it is the ghost of the man who returns to see his final resting place. Well done.
Simply beautiful.
Wicked! Absolutely wicked!
What a beautiful photo!
Very cool!
great effect. wonder what the color pic would look like!
Very cool.
Wonderfully surreal and beautiful.
Wow, that is an awesome shot! Absolutely love it.
I love the pictures you take; they are always amazing, even theough they are so different. Thank you for sharing!
You’re an amazing photographer.
<3
Wow, love how you capture these mountain ranges. My first experience photographing mountains was in Wales last fall. I haven’t posted the pics yet but I definately share the fascination with them that you seem to have. Great work, looking forward to following your blog.
Beautiful photos. I lived in Colorado for 10 years up in the mountains at 8,000 feet. Hiking and the snow is one thing I really miss about it. Your photos are bringing up all kinds of memories. Thanks! I shared your blog on my Facebook art page (Oviedo Style) so more people can enjoy these photos.
I hope you sell a lot of prints.
Simply amazing. Very talented
Spooky and beautiful!
You have to take a breath for this one! Truly Wow!
Oh, I love it!
Gorgeous photos! Thanks for the follow
WOW. Nicely done!
thanks for coming by my blog – I wish I had photography skills nearly as good as yours!
I can’t believe that wasn’t even photoshopped! Amazing. I actually stopped by to tell you I’m giving you a shout out on my blog tomorrow, since your photos have been such an inspiration for me this week. Cheers!
really lovely – the transitory nature of man
wow..surreal..!!
YIKES! It’s the Slender Man!
Sorry, but I had a nightmare this morning about the Slender Man and I’m still a bit shaken hahaha!
Beautiful. My parents just got back from a trip to Banff. I can’t wait to explore that part of the world some day.
haunting!
Hey Patrick,
Way cool! Way.
Hope you had a great day!
Awesome ! And so unique !
Marvelous complexity on film ~
Outstanding photos and narrative.
Dude! What a rush! I’ve stood in your shoes without the equipment or talent to capture the AWE! Thanks for reminding me where I really live.
Outstanding photography and narrative.
Haunting and beautiful!
You have great stuff going on here. I am jealous. And thanks for liking my posts though they seem too trivial to the kind of stuff that you do.
More power.
Very beautiful photo! Wow
I LOVE this one!!
WOW. speechless. This is beautiful! Amazing blog!!
Very creative idea for this picture, it turned out great! Thanks for following my blog, too.
surreal photo.
Wonderful.
Beautiful. The texture of the dock shows up very nicely.
Beautiful photograph. With all the high-tech photos these day, it’s really refreshing to see good (“old-fashioned”—I mean that in the best possible way) art photography.
I can’t stop looking at your photos – absolutely breathtaking <3
Wow, this is amazing! A little scary but beautiful at the same time.
There is so much to absorb here, the smaller details are as important as the larger ones. I really like the texture of the wooden posts, for example. Also, I’m waiting for your brother to take one more step, which to my eye, would land him right in the water/snow/mist…
A very haunting photo – thank you again
Wendy
Great shot, thanks for sharing the story and details.
Damn you are good!
So good and unusual. It kind of speaks to me of a merging of nature with ourselves. Great skill. Really admire it.
Hi Patrick, Thank you for visiting my site. Greatly appreciated. Jo
God, your photography is beautiful. Thanks for following my blog, badvixen.wordpress.com! xx
Beautiful!
Hi Patrick, Great shot. It shows that perseverance pays off on the end. I admire your patience to pull it all together. Well done. Chris G
Wow, stunning! Magnificant
amazing photo! I’ve been messing around with longer shutter speeds and movement lately, I might have to see if I can get this effect now
stunning!
Beautiful, love the tones and the movement!
Stunning pic
Oh, how cool!
Very cool!
Great photo! I wondered before I read the article how you achieved that! How many steps did he take and what was your shutter speed???
Beautiful!
Stunning
I am working on some slow-shutter photos this week, so I am a bit envious of this shot. Nice job.
“Oh my god, it’s all one picture!” I just said out loud to the dog. This is absolutely amazing!!
Hello,
Just letting you know that I’ve nominated you for One Lovely Blogger Award.
Check it out at http://sassandbalderdash.com/2012/09/14/one-lovely-blog/
Really clever and beautiful, and so nice that it’s not Photoshop trickery! So uncommon these days.
Ghostly. Almost menacing.
I dont get it, you cant even see your brother. Its all blurry….JUST JOKING, That is an amazing shot. Not only the ghostly image, but the symmetry of the whole shot and contrast in black and white. Nice!
This is shockingly beautiful and spooky at the same time. Gorgeous!
Absolutely love this photo; so serene, makes me want to be there, awesome!
Soo Happy you stopped by my blog so I would be able to follow here. Your photography is stunning and I am glad you shared it. Thanks so much.
I just love this!…
Beautiful – Wouldn’t it make a lovely statement wall piece for a bedroom….
Love, love, love this!
Loved this one!
That is something I believe true photopgraphy is all about. To take a photo using only your camera and not having to use any digital editing software. That is real photography.
This have got to be my favourite picture on your blog. It is amazing. Thanks again for liking my posts
I just have to tell you that your photography is amazing. I find myself wanting to move back to Denver. Keep up the amazing work!
I always love digging up old photos. The B&W conversion is always a pain in the ass because of the sky…I never know if I’m happy with that muddy-like consistency compared to the rest of the photo…maybe that’s just me. Of course, cool shot.
Beautiful yet eerie! Love it!
Absolutely beautiful, love all the different depths. Gorgeous work
Haunting. Love it.
Amazing. He looks like a ghost!
WOW!
Truly ingenious…. I love the ghostly look in contrast with the sharpness of the background… Very nice!
My first comment here… but I have to say.. Simply STUNNING pics… ALL OF THEM!
Very Good Photo! Thanks for liking my posts.
I love all your work. Absolutely stunning.
someone said “haunting”. It really is! so incredible. I love it.
Awsome. The contrast between the out of focus person and the spectacular mountain is great.
fully agree.
Love your photos, very beautiful! Thanks for the like on my post.
Lovely, ethereal.
I love this!
Fantastic. Saw you stumbled on my blog as well. Glad I piqued your interest. Great photos.
Great photography!!! A little eerie, Love it!
Wow love this photo. It is kind of surreal!
Dude that is so cool! Proof you can still do cool stuff without photoshop…
Eerie…but so cool!
Oh wow, I love this so much!
This photo makes me miss Banff already…..that is a crazy beautiful photo.
absolutely stunning, patrick!!! well done, i love following your work!
I would love a print of this hanging in my house – it is absolutely beautiful. Great work.
Fantastic image
I’m really enjoying your photography. Excellent stuff.
love this. cheers
Your images are beautiful! I’m thankful that you liked my post- it gave me the opportunity to see your amazing work.
Holy crap that’s incredible. Great vision, delivery and choices here.
Patrick…I’ve been perusing your site this past week. Your photos are inspiring. Thanks for liking some of my posts and introducing your world of awe inspiring photography to me. Blessings.
Wonderful photography…I love black and white, in particular. Do you ever use “real” film? I find using standard b&w film with a red filter produces brilliant contrast, resulting in something similar to the result you got through photoshop. Maybe I’m just nostalgic for darkrooms and winding film canisters
Are these pictures for real, Patrick? By the way…pleasure being with you in here =)
Beautiful.
I. Love. This. Period.
This is such an atmospheric photo and with the spooky image would be perfect inspiration for my writing. I write horror and YA fantasy.
Outstanding photos! Awesome job
Oh my! I can’t say a word….
ur shots are very artistic, well captured and nicely edited …
these are amazing!
So cool! k.
I don’t share your gift and I am certain your context for each image is quite different than others’ assumptions, but I love the contrast between the permanence of the landscape against the fleeting footprint of the visitor. Exquisite.
Thanks for your visit…I like this photo. It puts in perspective the anniversary of my loved ones loss, which was twelve years ago today. We are all shadows walking in the time of light…
Very creative idea, the result is super eerie…
Your photos are amaging. I really like your mustache girl in an earlier post too. Humor is always a good subject.
Beautiful photos!
Love this picture…!! amazing—
Thank you for liking my blog, I like yours aswell. I have a bachelor’s degree in photography so I feel the urge to say how amazing your pictures are. I especially like this picture, it remindes me to a long time picture I took of my body on an ancient settle.
Wow, spectacular shot!
Great texture in the foreground, intriguing shot! Love black and white. Your wordpress theme complements your photos and photo journals really well.
Very cool!
I’ve just perused your whole blog, and I have felt my heart pound, and my breath taken away by your amazing photography. You are a wonderful photographer with the ability to make a person feel like they are there with you standing on the edge. I will be following you, because I love landscapes, nature (even though I’m not a fan of heights) and I’ve never seen pictures as beautiful as these are. Keep it up!
i love the shadow image!
Your photographs are phenomenal. I can’t wait to catch up and see everything you’ve created!
Your photographs are stunning!! There are people that have an eye for beauty and people that can take pictures. Thankfully you have dipped into each pool and created some magic. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more.
classy i say
Well done, love it!

Hauntingly beautiful.
Your photographs are lovely works of art.
God, I love this shot. Outstanding.
Hauntingly beautiful shot!
OH! I love this; it’s Magical!
Awesome! This makes me want to write, haha
Tonight’s task is to convert my jealousy into an openness to purloin pieces of photography education from you. It’s going pretty well so far. Do you teach classes? And congrats on the great blog, that ability to buy pictures directly from the blog is perfect.
Amazing. Simple. Beautiful.
I love this! It’s a perfect photo where the scenery is so calm and still besides the ghost like figure.
Love your work Patrick
Wow! That is an amazing shot. Keep it up.
Cool
Beautiful.
ghost-like. so cool.
Your work is amazing. When I slow down a bit around here–or as we call it “Winter”…. I plan to make a selection or more of your images!
Very cool shot!
My breathing ceased when I came upon this photo. I love art that causes a physical reaction.
Awesome photos…

I love b&w photography, but this is just something else altogether. Wow!
Beautiful photography. I love the “ghost” shot.

This photo is amazing
wow beautiful! Love the black and white
I just saw you began following my blog, so I stopped by your site. Your photography is beautiful! This photograph is particularly striking.
Dude, you have an amazing eye for the camera shots!!! Photography is one of my passions, though I never could carry it out!!!
Nice that you used old fashioned try and try again instead of jumping to the computer to create such a thought provoking image. Enjoyed your sharing.
Patrick: I don’t buy prints. I am a photographer myself. But I enjoy looking at them, yours in particular. I should ‘Like’ one or two of them to show what I think are best. And I enjoy your Likes and Comments of my posts. Thank you. George Chris Michas If I can find you and you are on Facebook, I will ask you to Friend. I go by that complete monicker “George Chris Michas” Best wishes!

This is so very hauntingly beautiful!
Great image. Nice to know it wasn’t digital manipulation but good old fashioned photography technique. I’ve used it as a writing prompt this morning – if you get a ping-back from me, that’s why.

WOW! It’s a beautiful job
This might just be my favourite!
clever. like subject manipulation as a technique as opposed to post-production. I’ve been shooting long before ‘digital’ was in our dictionary – nice to see ‘older’ methods seen as valid/creative. Love your work.
beautiful photo . Thanks for stopping my blog!
Very haunting!
Stunning ! Do you have a portfolio of your monochromes ?
Thanks for following my blog. Very beautiful photos!
