The Calgary Zoo
Photos
This is a collection of photos from my last few zoo visits; I thought I would share them on here. The best time to get photos at the zoo is right when they open: the animals are most active and the light is usually the most interesting. Try to shoot with something at least 200mm and use large apertures to blur the background and isolate the subject. Doing this will have the added benefit of blurring the fence between you and the animal to the point of it disappearing most times. Always try to shoot from the same eye level as whatever you are shooting and keep the eyes in focus. Sometimes you may have to stay at one exhibit for 10-20 mins before you really get a shot worth keeping; so don’t be discouraged.

Gorgeous pictures!

These shots are STUNNING!! You have a real gift.
These are absolutely breathtaking. The zebra and the gorilla are my favorites. How did you get so close to the zebra? Or was it just an amazing zoom lense?
Not your usual zoo visit pics! Love them, and can’t wait to try and employ some of these techniques the next time we visit a zoo. ~ Kat B.
Breathtaking photos. So clear, vivid, and capturing the emotion of the animals. I especially love the eyes of the gorilla. It looks like he looking right at you, saying “What do you want?” Brilliant job.
WOW that shot of the gorilla’s eyes is INCREDIBLE! Kind of spooky, too… so human-like

I was never in Calgary zoo. However, I once was close to it, and saw two belted kingfishers on a wire across the river.
Wow, these are breathtaking.
Beautiful!
wow !
You’re an amazingly good photo artist. It really looks as if you’re sitting right next to some of these animals so it takes the viewer inside there with you even though there’s a fence somewhere in there. Great images and wonderful art
.
The zebra picture absolutely took my breath away. So gorgeous! And that gorilla photo is lovely. It always astounds me how beautiful and emotive their eyes are.
Wow! Great shots!
Wow, these don’t even look like they’re shots from the zoo. More like a wildlife trek. The gorilla photo is haunting! Love it.
You’re absolutely right!!!
This series of shots is excellent. You captured each creature’s unique beauty and I am loving every single one! I could gush more, of course, but shall stop here.
I am, however, very tempted to download and save them as my wallpaper! Great job!

… I specifically like the way you captured the expression of the tiger cub, and that of the eyes of the ape.
Wonderful! absolutely wonderful!
I’d almost rather look at these than go to the zoo, and I love the zoo. Fabulous!
These are very touching and captivating images! Thank you for sharing.
These are amazing! I especially love the first pic on top. Simply breathtaking!
Along with everyone else in the world, I love the gorilla. He / she just looks so wise …
Thanks for following my blog! These are breathtaking. The gorilla gives me the chills.
Love all these photos! doesn’t even look like you were in a zoo!! (thanks for the likes on my blog too) Great work!
I live in Edmonton, so the Calgary Zoo is always a yearly trip. Your photos make the zoo appear in ways never before. Absolutely STUNNING. I especially love the zebra shot and of course the tiger’s “PLAYING”. xx
http://thebuttonupblog.com
And I was thinking about uploading pictures from ZOOs in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and Lisbon! Well, now I will have to wait:) I just love the zebra! Best greetings from Lisbon!:)
I almost bought 4 square ones: the zebra, quail (?) with baby quail, gorilla, and wombat (?) (I obviously don’t know my animals). However, as I looked at the “wombat” – I really connected with its gaze – looking yonder and aspiring for more – maybe ready to take a leap. So, I bought it. In metallic. 8 X 10. I’ve never bought a photograph before!! Please feel flattered
I hope, that in supporting your work, you can also consider supporting mine: http://igg.me/p/229037?a=1253505. It’s for me to take a leap, to aspire for more, just how you captured it in that photograph.
Absolutely stunning! I can barely look at the gorilla photo I feel like it can almost see into my soul…amazing, truly beautiful!
The Zebra is definitely my favourite! The collection is very inspiring.
Beautiful photos!
I love the flamingos – beautiful and the reflection in the pond – great job : )

the ordering process was so easy but I hope it doesn’t really take 3 weeks for my gorilla shot to get to me because I’ve got a spot picked out for it right over there. It’s a great shot. Scary but also inspirational on a control and use your brain kind of way. I like it.

Hi,
Fantastic photography on your blog, but in this post, the zebra just made my day. Excellent and very “graphic” image.
Beautiful photos! If you hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have guessed that they were taken in a zoo!
Wow. Just wow.
I reckon it’s all down to your hardworking models!
Beautiful photographs, truly amazing. Love them.
Love that little guy in the second photo. I am guessing by your tags he is a red panda.
All the pictures are absolutely beautiful, but I just love the ‘cats’.
So Beautiful. I am in love with the baby peacock/hen.

I love the gorilla shot! Great job!
These are really amazing if I wasn’t like 15 and didn’t own a credit card I’d definitely order. Do you take IOUs?
Love the Red Panda shot!
These are beautiful photos Patrick, unfortunately I do have a thing about zoos! Unless of course they are doing some really good work on animal husbandry and species longevity etc.
Regards
Great advice — note to self . . . do not bring family along or I won’t be able to stay in one spot for too long. They are much too impatient and think I take way too many pictures
Gorgeous photos! The gorilla’s eyes are wise and intense, but the shot of the zebra’s eye really engaged my emotions. For some reason, I can feel his sadness and loneliness through your photo. I also liked how you captured the “spotlight” on one particular flamingo! Thanks for following What About This?, too.
Thanks! It was early morning and the sun was low in the sky. The sun was cutting through small section of trees and I waited until one the flamingos stepped into the light.
Hi Patrick, it is absolutely incredible that you were able to take these photo’s in a Zoo!
The one with the baby cat looking right at the camera took my breath away. The zebra is captivating. These are beautiful. Well done!
Stunning photos as always. I especially like the photos of the zebra and the gorilla – it must be the eyes, they seem to reflect so much.
You’re not only a photographer: you’re a very talented, gifted artist. And a great deal of sensitivity, love and courage is required for this sort of work. You know that a lot better than I do.
Thank you for posting your photos of animals in a Zoo that seem to be running free and living out there in wild life. One wouldn’t even notice the difference if you hadn’t told it.
It’s impossible not to love all photographs, but I have a special passion for photo no. 2. (I don’t know this sweet animal’s name in English, I’m afraid). You kept (framed?) its sweet, tender, but at the same time almost melancholic look, as if it was missing something or / and someone since always. I don’t know why, or I know it too well, but it touched me. It moved me deep inside. And the colours and its accuracy… the photo’s background intentionally unfocused… Only the animal and that eye look mattered… I could write a poem on each photograph of yours. I could even pretend I was that animal! (…)
You must love these creatures to shoot them the way you do. I admire that a lot!
I thank you for sharing this great gift of yours with us. It’s also admirable and noble that you share your knowledge with people, giving tips on this and that… I guess you are aware of the unique person you are… at least I hope it.
Wish you the best. You indeed seem to deserve it!!!

Wow wow wow
Beautiful photos! I love the tigers
The pic of the zebra is very beautiful!
The one of the gorilla’s eyes is haunting. The last time I was at the Calgary Zoo, the apes were my favorite part because they were so eerie in how human they seemed. Your photo reminds me of how blurred the line is between us and them, or of how we blur those lines in our desire to humanize them. Awesome photo.
Oh!!!!! So beautiful!!! You make me want to go to the zoo right now!! You have such stirring closeups! And the peahen and chick’s gait is so heartwarmingly identical I almost teared. :’)
As always, magnificent photos! When I have tried taking photos at our local zoo, I have always been stymied by the fences. A photo of a wild animal loses a lot when you are looking through a wire fence.
I am in love with these animals! Amazing work.
These photographs are absolutely beautiful. They are so inspirational and gorgeous to look at. Your talent is magnificent! Thank you for posting and I look forward to more photographs in the future.
fascinating photos of wildlife

The photos are superb! I love the zebra, the gorilla, the guinea hen and the flamingos. I just wish the animals were loose and you were on safari instead of a zoo.

Hey. Wow. The zebra is spectacular. “Uh-oh” cub is stellar, too. All of them.
The Gorilla’s eyes are rather haunting. Not happy eyes. Might have to spring him. If you hear about a Gorilla from your zoo on the lam, going to the ballet, with some crazy girl. You know nothing, kay?
these pics are awesome, def dont come across this everyday
Fabulous work! The gorilla is chilling and masterfully done…and I love the red panda.
this is A wow…! very well done!
I began looking at the photos before I realized they were taken at a zoo. At first, I thought they’d been taken at some exotic locale, and when I first viewed the gorilla, I THOUGHT IT WAS A HUMAN BEING!
Fantastic photos once again Patrick! The gorilla photo & the zebra. Really emotive, especially the gorilla. I’ll have to do a day trip one day to our local zoo. You really are very talented.

These are incredible. It doesn’t even appear you are in a zoo. I know I went there once when I was young. I am from northern Montana, so we we close to Canada. Anyway, you photography is utterly astounding.
Patrick, there is probably nothing I could say that hasn’t already been penned; your photos are amazingly intimate and I think, insightful…I have a thing for gorilla’s in zoos; they are far to knowing to be there. to me, they look like they are in prison. What do you think??
Jess

Thought these shots from the zoo were wonderful. I love the focus on “the windows of the soul”
Great pics. I guess another key thing about getting in as early as possible is the fact that there will be very few people to interfere with photography.
Excellent photos. The eyes have it…on both sides of the lens.
These are stunning: both naturalistic and up-close-and-personal, as though you were there at that particular frozen-in-time moment. They make my heart swell.

And to think, I was SO pleased that some of my shots from a recent zoo trip just came out relatively clear and with some vibrant colors here and there…you put me to shame! I absolutely love how you captured the soft lighting on the Zebra close up…very delicate, and very difficult. Bravo.

Hi Patrick, may I ask you how you obtained those warm tones in your beautiful shots? Was it the camera setting or some post producing work? Thanks for your answer
The photo of the Zebra is hands down one of the best wildlife shots I’ve ever seen.

Fierce! Love this post!
I absolutely adore these photos – I usually take so many at the Zoo and they just sit, un-edited, un-seen on my computer. You’ve inspired me to actually do something with them! Thanks as well for your ‘like’ on my post – http://samsmushbanana.wordpress.com/2012/10/21/the-eeyore-effect/. It’s extremely encouraging for someone who has only just started up.
LOVE the one with the gorilla. Those eyes…
