Smoke Photography (Magic Lamp)
Story
I’ll start by saying that there are no Photoshop tricks in this image, the only adjustments were adding the two tone colour and some noise cleanup. The image is actually rotated counter clockwise 90 degrees; I just felt like the smoke created an almost magic lamp shape if I did this. I took 100′s of photographs and after going through them, I felt this one had the most interesting shape.
I have included a link to an article I found, which shows a similar setup and procedure to what I used.

So incredibly beautiful!
That is really cool. I’ll have to try it. I’ve done similar things with candles and the torched-end of a stick outside in the dark, but not this.

Honestly, I love the color contrast of the smoke especially the fact you can actually see where the color changes, awesome!
Beautiful!!
As always, your photo astonishes me. I am hiking in North Wales at the moment, trying so hard to capture the beauty of the mountains around me, but not really succeeding. I keep thinking, what would Patrick do? How would he do this justice?!
It never ceases to amaze me the wonderful things one can do with modern photography! Beautiful image.
I wish I had a print of this for my wall, seriously. What is the smoke from?
You never stop surprising me mate. Great photo, kinda wish I had the cash to buy a print.

Hey, thanks for liking my post! You’re quite a skilled photographer, but I’m sure you hear that a lot. Do you ever hear that you look like Owen Wilson? Probably. I’m following your blog now Brotha.
Beautiful. I’m learning so much about photography. Thanks for nurturing my curiosity
Ok, that’s cool. I get to be the 111′th commentator for this thread. And as tempting as it is to read the rest of the comments which I actually honestly frequently do, I will instead just stop by here long enough to say, that I am a total “light-junkie” – pretty much doesn’t matter in which form it takes, and so how could I not be drawn like a moth to this fabulous image. Simply ‘superlative’ !!
wow… this is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G
At this point, it’s maybe getting a bit old after 100+ comments, but I’d like to add my “amazing” to the chorus. Really beautiful!
This is a remarkable work of art…and I salute you!
I have no idea how this is done but it is a marvel. Keep taking pictures.
Last year, on a trip in the Southwest, I took some of my “mistake” photos and re-looked at them as abstracts.
