Shambhala 2012
Shambhala is a music festival with a population of 10,000 nestled in a valley in southern BC, near the town of Salmo. It’s one my favourite places to keep coming back to and this year I had the honour of shooting on their media staff. There are far too many photos to post all of them on here so I have also included a link to the full FB album.
There was often a fog that blanketed the valley in the early morning hours. This was one my favourite times to shoot.

I had arrived a few days before the festival had officially opened its gates and the normally car-packed fields were eerily quiet.

As the morning sun crept over the distant mountains, everybody is getting their vehicles ready to move from the parking lot line and into the festival.

It’s never a far walk to get away from the craziness of the festival and see some of the amazing beauty of the valley itself.

While Shambhala is primarily a music festival, what makes it so special is the incredible amount of hardwork by some amazingly talented people that goes into the art installations and stages.

If you need a break from the music, there is no shortage of things to do during the day. From morning yoga sessions held near the river to…

…hanging acrobatic classes to…

…writing a wish and placing it in the ‘Wish Tree’

While the nights can sometimes get close to freezing, the days are usually 30 degrees plus. There are always ways to keep cool even if you’re not down by the glacial fed river.

Friday marks the day that the opening ceremonies happen at the ‘Labyrinth’ stage.

Shambhala wouldn’t be Shambhala without the incredibly warm and diverse people that call it home for that one weekend a year.

Not to mention the crazy costumes you see as you make your way through the festival.

What has always made the festival so special to me, are the memories made with new and old friends.

This year even included a wedding; this is the bride and her father.

The father of the bride as he looks up the staircase that led to the alter.

The bride and groom rode off in a vintage red ford fire truck.

While the festival may seem at its peak during the day, it’s at night where it really comes alive. There are 5 different stages to choose from and everything in between to experience.

the pics are damn awesome!! grabs the mood in such an authentic way.
Yes! Thats exactly what i felt.. its like your there, can hear the sounds and feel the warm love. Great Photos!
Adore the first photo- and the rest looks like quite an experience!! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome. Kind of reminds me of ACL fest in Austin. Hairy dudes; crazy outfits, great scenery and stellar music.
Our world is full of amazing people. And you have captured their joy of life! Your artistic abilities remind me of this quote: “If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn’t need to lug around a camera.” – Lewis Hine
That is the PERFECT quote Clanmother. Patrick, I am continually awed by your talent to capture life.
Great set of photos
This is so fabulous, how do you get the great photos? The festival looks like I’d be right at home.

Hard to believe these photos are just from one weekend. Beautiful scenery, great portraits, and some amazing night sky pictures but my favorite is the very first one. The enormous tree, the VW, and the thick fog… Perfect!
Beautiful!!

Wow seems so inadequate. I love the sunlight coming through the trees shot and the soap bubble shot.
Wow – how fun to find my daughter in one of your photos – the young pregnant woman doing yoga in the center of the yoga shot. Do you know her? Do we know each other? We are following each others blogs andI have often forwarded your beautiful photos to my other daughter, a photographer as well.
This is probably one of many blogger award nominations for you, but I’ve nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. No need to participate, but it’s just a special little way of saying, “hey, I think your blog is cool.”
These photos, somehow, touched my heart. They are all amazing and have different special meaning (and stories) in every photos. Marvelous photos! *I hope I were there too..*

A stunning series of images here! You manage to capture the essence of the event, not only in the obvious shots, but also in the less immediate ones. Beautiful, and I hope you don’t mind if I reblog? Thanks for sharing!

I’ve posted some of this blogger’s moutainous images before, but these, too, are simply stunning!
How beautiful! The name, Shambhala, immediately piqued my interest because as I’m sure you know, S Shambhala was the name of a mystical, mythical(?) Tibetan Buddhist kingdom which is, for Buddhists, the equivalent of “Heaven.” I always feel so happy and ‘light’ when I think of this kingdom… Looking at your photos, of an event with the same name, made me feel wonderful, as well. Your art captures much more than the images: It conveys the cosmic energies, as well. Bravo!
Thanks for passing by my blog.
What I have seen of yours up to now is awsome… love your photos!
wonderful pics !
OMG That is one of the most amazing set of photographs I have ever seen. What a festival. What a brilliant photographer! You have an incredibly keen eye. Going to look at them again now. Thanks so much
Wow! Amazing talent, amazing photos, looks like an amazing time too
Patrick, I always enjoy visiting here because you are so talented. The fog photos are definite favourites and I have to ask about the photo with the wooden bridge . . . did you capture a falling star? Amazing eye.
Thanks Patrick. You take us places with your pictures that most of us would never get to see otherwise!
amazing photos!
Sun shining through trees … hard to choose a favorite, but if I had to, that would be it,. Your eye makes me want to put away my camera because I pale in comparison … then again, as a novice, I am inspired to keep working and learning. Thanks! (this festival looks a bit like our FloydFest in Virginia)
Can only agree with all my previous commentators! Was wondering about one thing: first picture – has it been worked at in any way in terms of Photoshop? I find my pictures, taken under these circumstances utterly boring hence haven’t been taking pictures unless the weather is more or less bright and sunny. But others always look amazing ….
Reminds me of Woodstock without the mud and hopefully the drugs…..
Wonderful pictures. You can’t beat the atmosphere of a festival. I have very fond memories of our summer holidays spent at places just like this, including Glastonbury and Cambridge festivals: pure joy!
Great exposure of the night shots.
wow i just found your blog out and your pictures are exquisite! so amazing , keep up the good work
Wow wow wow wow wow! These photographs … I’m speechless! I knew The West (CA and US) is beautiful but… And what you’ve captured of the people, too… That’s it. I’m officially in awe. Thank you do much for sharing! It’s beautiful work!

First photos without the PEOPLE are great. You must have had a blast photographed all the activities/people. What a show, just to watch the people.
Spectacular shots!
Amazing, just simply _amazing_ work! So glad to add you to my reader!!!
What phenomenal human beings… I wish I could know them. What’s the drive from Seattle? haha!
Jeeez…Great photos!!! Congrats! the sky…I have no words…wonderful..
They’re all great but I especially love the first one. It’s like the opening shot to a film and I hold my breath because I’m not sure yet if something good or bad is about to happen.
Some excellent pics here Patrick, and some almost appear as if they could have been taken in the 60′s. Great to see that Love & Peace is alive and well in some parts of the world at least.
Great stuff!
Mark
Very nice pictures. You’re very good at what you are doing…
Brilliant vivid photos! When I viewed the first picture I instantly thought of the book Into the Wild. And did not know what was going to be next; WOW!!! Loved all of the pictures and I especially like the statement on the back of one male, love is the key open some doors! Well said within the pictures!!
You certainly brought the Shambhala to life with your photos. It would be quite the experience to attend/participate.
This did remind me of the days of “Woodstock” but it bares a remarkable resemblance to the annual “Burning Man”
http://www.burningman.com/ . I would be curious if you had heard of it or had ever been to it and had the opportunity to compare.
This video is one of my favourite representations of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahv_1IS7SiE
Great pictures of happy people!
Always capturing the greatest pics ever!!!
Let me just say for the record that these are just AMAZING photos! I just love the vibe and spirit of the event, and you captured it on film beautifully. Thanks for sharing this, and also for showing an interest in my blogsite as well.
Looking forward to more gorgeous and inspiring pictures, Patrick!

I just want to share this amazing post to you guys because the photos are just too cool for words. It almost makes you want to be there when it happened. That, and the spirit of the whole thing is just so chill, indie, hippie, DIY–elements that I adhere to with my online fashion business. In any case, I hope you enjoy viewing the inspiring images courtesy of Patrick Latter Photography. Cheers, y’all!

So thoroughly enjoyed viewing photographs of such happy, friendly spirits collectively producing good energy for the planet. The first photograph (fog) is just stunning portrait. Your eyes see much more than mine do. Thank you for sharing your photographs.
Amazing!! A totally new world.
Fascinating. Just fascinating. One part Woodstock. One part circus. Maybe some Burning Man thrown into the mix? Oh I don’t know…but great pics.
WOW! Great stuff!
Awesome! Love how you captured the beauty of the festival… I would love to attend this one day soon.
As usual, you’re many steps ahead of me. I followed you back home from Paper Mouse this time. I enjoy each new series of photographs from wherever you go!
This is so awesome, because I have never been to a festival like this but you made me feel like I was experiencing it somehow! Thank you for that! Beautiful photos as always! xx
This looks like a blast. Fantastic photos!
Hey Patrick
These shots of the festival are stunning. Your work is a real buzz. Go well.
What an amazing experience this must have been! I loved the people shots especially. So many expressions and faces. Wonderful!
You breathe an extra layer of life into your photography that creates a mini story to every shot. Incredibly jealous of your skill, something to aspire to!
Wow–looks like Burning Man before tickets started selling at $5,000 on eBay… Also reminds me of some of the better Goa raves in the late 90′s and perhaps even Ibiza in the next decade. I’m tapping the keyboard to the sounds of FatBoy Slim as I write. This puts me in a very good mood indeed, thank you.
Sadly, because I’m a conspiracy theorist, I will not be able to check out the broader collection on Facebook (never was, never will be on Facebook). But I can now dream for a while and you have opened the door to dreaming, on this particular occasion.
Thank you both for supporting my modest blog and for sharing your transcendental work.

Dude.
You really have a gift.
great story, you make it real to feel the atmosphere of that place
I read your piece and loved it but could have easily just had the photographs and would have left feeling the same. You have an incredible gift for telling a story, without words.

I bet that was one awesome party. Looking at your pics I can almost hear the conversations and feel the dirt between my toes. Bravo!
<3
These photos are amazing. The moments you capture of people are especially beautiful.
Just.. wow!
Dear Patrick,
I have been following your art for a few months and always impressed at both your artistic eye and technical skill. I love taking pictures, but there is a lot I would love to learn. I don’t know what you do outside of taking pictures, but would you consider holding something like a photobootcamp. Not free of course. Like a weekend of both learning technical skills, editing, understanding how to get what you want to get from pictures. If I was to learn from someone, I would prefer it to be someone I think is really good. Thats if you don’t do something like this already. For my own selfish reasons, I really think you should do this. Expensive wedding photographers costs upwards of $7000. You could help about 14 people in one weekend….. What do you think? My pictures are at http://www.lenstherapy.zenfolio.com I need help

I did art festival for 28 years and this was a great reminder of all the good times I had. We camped at the sites or stayed at friends houses and became one. Artists, whether muscians, dancers, yogi, painters, craftsman, etc., have a bond and connection that most common people would not understand.
You’ve presented a well documented portrait of creative souls.
namaste ,,,,,

Simply a brilliant set of images….you are bloody good!
Love the combi in the first photo. Had one just like it surfing in Europe in 1988. Does yours have the stove and water pump right behind the passenger seat?
More importantly, I love how you not only capture the energy, but also live the energy. Thank you.
I am constantly in awe of the places you go and the photos you take. I feel as if I could be standing in the field looking at that VW van. : )
Pics took my breath away…. I need a doctoooooor!

The Northwest is not such a bad place to meet people. N’est-ce pas? Photographer Patrick Latter truly captures the romantic and fairy tale-like moments of the music festival for his fellow bloggers. I don’t know if I should thank Mr. Latter for making me feel regretful of not knowing about Shambhala sooner. I suppose that is Mr. Latter’s talent inspiring me to seek out more adventures. Thank you Mr. Latter.

Excellent. Great b&w mist pic (better than the green laser light pic); right in the action, with some tricky timing, intimate moments and dance/light show in high-def color.
Wow…absolutely beautiful and interesting. I love the yoga series. I’ll have to add this music festival to my bucket list.
I wish the whole world could feel the love that these folks are showing. Gives me hope
I just soaked up these images. I couldn’t help but get lost in them. Simply beautiful. I love the father of the bride’s face as he watches his little girl ascend the staircase. I hope you had a great time. I bet you couldn’t put your camera down!
What awesome photos.
wow! What wonderful pictures! Thanks for sharing these awesome photos
You are an amazing photographer! I especially love the shambhala photos – some of them have a mystical quality to them. Great work!
Your great photos remind me of the things I love about BC. Lived there for about 6 mo in 1969. Went out there with my wife and four teenage kids (CN train and rented minivan) in 1989. The kids saw possibilities of alternative lifestyles they would never have experienced in Ontario.
Wow! What a trip – I feel like I’m there. Great images! Thanks for sharing!
yessss!
Thank you!
I love the photo of the garden and the one of the beach. The sky looks great in that one!
One word….. amazing.
Thanks for the follow and liking my post
Great photos, you’ve captured the vibe of the place well. That is, I’m assuming it was all about love and peace, man….

fabulous photos..
Hey Patrick. First of all thanks for the follow and the “likes”. I’m just starting out so it’s good to get some feedback. More importantly. Your photographs are amazing. I think that this is my favorite set of all. Anyway, thanks again. You keep being a rugged adventuring photographer protagonist type of person. That is a very cool type of person.
Your photography has a language of its own and speaks beautifully! I SO want to go Shambhala after seeing your post! Great work!
Beautiful depiction of festival culture. Thanks for being there to experience it. If you enjoyed it, perhaps you’ll consider Burning Man next year…
Thank you. That is the plan! I have wanted to go to burning man for years but next year will be the first time it’s possible for me. Have you been to burning man before?
2012 was my first year. It was, to my surprise, like going home. One of the greatest experiences of my life. As a result of it I changed a LOT – personality traits to priorities. I wouldn’t miss it again for the whole world. If it’s possible to go, and you feel the call, you should listen to it. You never know what could end up in front of your lens.
On another note, are you familiar with the photography of Kyer Wiltshire? He’s done a great job of capturing festival culture also.
And with those excellent nature pictures in this album you drew one more into your fans list, that me
SUPER!
Man you take amazing photos!! I can stare at them for hours!
Great Shots! Loved it all… Thank you very much for sharing!!

Hey, thanks for your photos, they are AMAZING. I actually just moved to Yellowknife from Nelson, so I know Shambhala well. Your photos made me feel right at home! Thanks too for stopping by my blog, as it lead me to yours!

What a terrific montage of photographs of a carnival atmosphere. I’m glad you liked my sign of Ducks Walking. Thank you for visiting my site. I thought it was kind of funny
Wow, these are fantastic! I’ve never had a chance to go to Shambhala but your coverage makes me want to go. Amazing shots.
You have taken such beautiful and quirky pictures. I think you really conveyed the spirit of the entire place in this post. Shambhala reminds me of a Northern UK festival called The Beat Herder which has a rather alternative chilled community supporting it.
