Spray Lakes
Directions
Take the road out of Canmore towards the Nordic centre. Continue past the Grassi Lakes and the Goat Creek day use parking. Follow the unpaved Spray lakes road for about 27-28km until you see the Sparrowhawk Picnic sign. The lake is on your right.
Background
I arrived at the lakes about 1.5 hours before sunrise in the hopes to get some astrophotography shots. I had the extraordinary luck of seeing the northern lights that morning as well.
With heavy clouds rolling in, the sunrise I was hoping for didn’t quite happen. I ended up walking down the rocky beach and taking some long exposures of the low lying clouds instead.
On the way back a curious happy young moose wandered by.

Fabulous!
The northern lights stunning beauty never ceases to amaze me.
Beautiful! I especially love the “smiling moose”…
Wow~~ the Northern Lights… What a dream to be able to see that. Something I can only dream of today, but one day, I will see the lights. You are an amazing photographer.
~Felicia
Like the black and white — and what’s not to love about the goofy moose?
Nice photography. Can I be your tripod boy next time you go taking photos
Really nice shots here!
I’ve seen many pictures of the Northern Lights, but never with the stars clearly visible, too. Amazing.

I grew up in Banff so I know the area well and know how beautiful it is. You captured it brilliantly!
Fantastic sceneries and colors!

beautiful so lucky to just happen to go see the northern lights like that. My mother once took me up fairly north in Quebec Province to see the Milky Way (In Philadelphia, way too much light pollution!) I hope too see the northern lights one day. The moose is amazing too.
And that is a perfect trip! Loved it.
Lovely! How close did you get to the moose?
Really, really wonderful pictures, Patrick. You are truly an artist… Thank you.
Amazing! The Northern lights are a spectacular sight.

You take the most excellent pictures! Wishing I was your camera right now so I can catch all the beauty first hand!
Living in the city I forgot that there are places in the world where you can still see stars in the sky. I can’t remember the last time I marveled at the stars. I must travel more in 2013. I miss seeing the stars.
amazing shots!
Fantastic place and photos! Thank you for sharing!
Oh I absolutely LOVE these photographs.
you really are lucky to be able to see the northern lights! those and the stars make for a gorgeous backdrop.

Astonishing photo of the moose!
Amazing photos; as always!
Wow! Just wow! Never thought I’d put “cute” and “moose” in the same sentence but that little moose is so darn cute!!
Gorgeous photos as always . The Northern lights are beautiful and I love the Moose, I have never seen an animal look so happy!
Completely amazing!
You should be congratulated for remembering to take any pictures at all. I think I would have just stood and stared at the sky until it was too late!
very talented as always ..
How lovely to look at and think about
Patrick! These photographs are outstanding! I especially love the ones of the Northern Lights. They capture so beautifully the magic that is all around us. So… um do you need an assistant to carry equipment?
Beautiful…. loved the baby moose!
What WOW factor! You are a lucky man to witness and capture such beauty!
Stunning shots as ever!
Talk about luck, Patrick! The colors and lights are AMAZING! Nature is a canvas!
I love the picture of the moose. I don’t think I’ve seen one before. And the northern lights pictures are breathtaking.
REally nice shots of the Aurora Borealis. And the moose — has to be the funniest expression I’ve ever seen on a moose. Started my Monday off on the right foot.
All great shots, but I really love the first one and it’s upward rise: the trees, the lights, the stars. Fantastic! The moose capture is special, too!
Amazing shots.
Because I live in Florida, I have never seen a live moose before. Not even at the zoo. Nice shots.
Absolutely fantastic images. That moose looks like he’s smiling at you.
I think these pictures speaks to everyone without exception, if I dared, I’d say in everyone’s name, we wish we would’ve witnessed it with our own eyes!
I like all these photos but the moose is my favorite.
The night sky is so beautiful..
So THAT’S where the Mac desktop image came from.
“Seeing the Northern lights” is near the top of my bucket list, but they’re unpredictable enough that I’m not sure how I’d plan a trip like that. In the meantime, I’ll just contentedly bask in your experience.
Beautiful setting for such a lovely view

Hi Patrick, thanks for following me. I’m glad you liked my last post.

Not much to add but these are just stunning.
excellent – my goal is to see the Northern Lights some day. beautiful pix.
As a writer, nature/astro photos are used for inspiration; yours, by far, the best!
Wow!
Good grief–magnificent!
The things one can see…. WOW!
Omg. Love the baby pose!
Beautiful shot of the Northern Lights and the angle on the moose makes me laugh, she looks like she’s smiling for you
The night-time sky looks magical!
First time I’ve seen a photograph of a young moose – cute animal.
Beautiful pics of the northern lights! I definitely hope to see them while I’m in Finland. And thanks for the follow on my blog!
OMG! I was so amused by your verbiage “a happy young moose wandered by” and then I saw the image… You’re right!!! He IS a happy guy! What a great capture! (All are amazing shots as always.) Mitchell Kyd
Beautiful photography! I’ve never seen a smiling moose before. The ones in Montana are grumpy. My family and I saw three moose in Glacier National Park one year. They came crashing out of the brush – a male, a female, and a baby. The bull was extremely grumpy. The cow and calf began swimming across Two Medicine Lake. The bull couldn’t make up his mind if he should follow her or attack us. Thankfully, he chose to follow her across the lake. We got some decent photos of them however.
Such consistently great work. Thanks, Patrick
That’s the Bullwinkle! Great photos.
Just always: Perfect.
Stunning work, Patrick! Your photographs of the aurora borealis are amazing. Really reminds me to make more of those DIY galaxy shirts for my clothing line
Keep it up and I look forward to seeing more great photos!
This is gorgeous. I love your work!
amazing pictures… absolutely gorgeous…. The sky and clouds impart such a heavenly feeling.
OMFG I have to get a credit card soon so I can start collecting your prints!!!
You are the luckiest man alive. Northern lights and a young moose all in one morning. Beautiful!
I like the black and white and the moose. Very, very nice.
Absolutely incredible!! Took my breath away.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooo…..aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh……
I’m thinking that you were probably meant to see that moose. No accidents, coincidences, or chance encounters!
Patrick — One word, “WOW!”
So jealous that you caught the Aurora they elude me still.
And, that second photo of the lake is stunning; it has a real painterly quality.
Just wow!
Very beautiful captures of the real world!
Incredible photos!
Your pictures are ravishing! Do you do portrait photos too?
It’s as if it’s not even real….:( I need to come!!!!
Nice. I saw a bit of the Lights on saturday about 1am, but it just made me lament the city. I have to say you found the happiest moose I’ve ever seen! I love it! Have a Great Week, Photo Hopper!
man your pictures are so alive.. where do you live ????
Very cool shots of the sky, unlike mine. Mine are funny. Oh can i have one of your cameras. Please . . .Pretty please with a cherry on top.
P.S . . .I’ll be your friend . . .Hey it works for the kids.
Gorgeous Work!
I used to live in Alaska when I was a child. I lived on a mountain, and the northern lights would get so close it felt like you could almost touch them. I didn’t realize I missed them so much until I saw your post! Great job…as always.
Love the b&w landscape and especially the moose! Bill
Beautiful work!
The northern lights shots are absolutely breathtaking! ~ Marsha
Oh my goodness sakes!! What a beautiful place. Loved the moose.
All I can say is, WOW!!
Love it!!!!! <3
Can’t ask for much more than some northern lights and a cute moose!
My favorite bloggers are photography bloggers, likely because of my inability to take pictures. heh You have beautiful photos
Wow, those photos are wonderful. I live the deep violet hue of those arura…beautiful. That young moose is such a catch! Congrats!
It must have been great to see and photograph the aurora. While they can be seen in Colorado, they’re generally on the faint side. It was nice of the moose to agree to a portrait.
Adorable moose!
Absolutely stunning photographs! I am so jealous, I really want to see the Northern Lights in person!
Patrick ~ I certainly hope you are on the Candian tourist bureau becuase you make Canada look like such a magical place!
Stunning and beautiful!
Beautiful pictures Patrick
I used to live in Calgary. You captured the beautiful mountain life in all colours, shapes and sounds.
Stunning
Every time you post a photo I am convinced I live in the wrong part of Canada. Absolutely breathtaking! ITA with azdreamcatcher’s post above.
Striking!
Love it!
That moose really is happy. Look at the smile on his face.
You may have missed your sunrise but I would say the Northern Lights more than made up for it. Beautiful shots.
Cute moose!
What a fairy land!! That shot of the moose is great, too, he looks so GOOFY

Breathtaking skies!
Beautiful, beautiful photos. They still my heart…
Great work Patrick!

Absolutely stunning photos!!!
Stunning, just stunning.
Wow, amazing pictures of the northern lights. The Banff area is one of our favorite places to visit. That seems to be one happy moose!
These are breathtaking.
The 3rd shot looks like the background for the Macbook… watch out they might sue you for copyright violations
hahaha
I really like the first night sky shot.
Stunning as always! The sky shots are amazing!
Majestic and beautiful. Thanks.
Breath taking!
Wonderful!! I’ve always wanted to see the aurora borealis. Perhaps someday. Until then, I will enjoy your pictures!
Gorgeous images Patrick!
Love the photos, especially of the young moose. Maybe it’s the influence of Rocky and Bullwinkle, or the moose’s appearance on the TV show “Northern Exposure,” but I love moose. [ That view was altered, however, after I read Gary Paulson's "Hatchet" and "Guts." Both of them involve a run-in with a moose ... and it wasn't pretty.]
Lovely!
Amazing pictures! Wowzer!
I love receiving notices of your work in my inbox. I feel like I’m cheating somehow, getting to see your photos for free. They must be STUNNING up close and “in person.”
Beautiful as always!
Magnificent shots!! Especially the Northern Lights!! BRAVO!!
I seem to have a problem using your like button but got the comments working, I think… Maybe after commenting ‘like’ will start working too?
Great photos! And love the happy moose
Love the Northern Lights and the moose looks like he’s smiling.
Amazing photos of the Northern lights, plus the moose kinda looks like Joe Camel.

Fantastic northern lights! The colors go straight to the brain. It’s a wonderful complement to the leaf color in my town right now.
Those lights are amazing! But that moose, oh my goodness. He’s as cute as our grand-basset.
wow this is amazing!
you nailed it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These are beautiful – what luck. I need to make it out to Canmore again very, very soon.
Excellent photos of the Northern Lights. I know they are the way solar activity looks in our atmosphere, but it really does look like the heavens opened, like God’s very spirit is upon all present.
Inspiring and breathtaking.
Wow! Amazing shots.
Amazing stuff
These are so incredible! I love the pictures of the clouds and the moose is so cute!
Awesome. I don’t think I could ever take shots with such precision.
I think I would love Canada! The nature seem to be a bit similar as in Finland, but ofcourse we dont have any mountains. Hope you some day go to Norwegian lappland to photogra
. Our countrys here are still quite clean and unpoluted, but i wonder for how long. Hope environment thinkingin Canada is better then in North America.
Magnificent shots!!!
amazing pictures! you’re such a lucky man!
Gah!! These are gorgeous!!!
Magical
Those photos are absolutely magical – made me speechless. Even if living in Sweden I have never seen the Northern Lights – Norrsken, as we call it.
Wow, great photos, what a beautiful area you live in.
Hi, thanks for the follow! So great to discover your blog, your photographs are absolutely stunning.
Per usual, your photos are stunning and exquisite. You are very talented, Patrick. I appreciate your stops by foodforfun. Thank you for the visits.
Magnificent photography. I especially like your third shot in this series. You didn’t get what you were looking for but captured something wonderful anyway. What were your settings for this, if you don’t mind sharing.
Awesome!
Just to reiterate what’s already been said, genuinely stunning photos you have here!
You always have extraordinarily beautiful work, Patrick! The northern lights were the best yet. You are so lucky to live in a beautiful place. Thanks for liking my blog, it’s quite a compliment when I see the quality work you do.
Oh holy!! That is so on my bucket list!!
Northern Lights are something I’ve always wanted to see and you’ve managed to capture something so pretty so beautifully.
Hi Patrick. What kind of exposure are you using on the Northern Lights? Are they that bright to the naked eye? They look like you could have reached out and touched them. Do they move or are they still, like sunbeams during the day? (Anyway, I’m sure I can check with Google God on that). The star backdrop and silhouette skyline make this a really stunning image. I am a compulsive obsessive star gazer so you have my attention. Did you notice you caught either a plane or a meteorite in the bottom left corner above the tree line? It’s a nice touch. Great pics all round. The moose is a winner (winners are grinners as they say.) Thanks for sharing. Yvette
Thanks. That particular night they were much dimmer to the naked eye, which allowed me to balance the exposure with the stars. I used a 30 second exposure for 1 of them. The lights do move through out the sky as well.
Stunning photos!
Breath-taking work. Thank you for sharing such wonderful images.
The black and white scene is my second fave. A picture paints a thousand words and those tree stumps (?) tell a story. Adds to the remoteness. It’s a moody kind of image. Grand and ominous at the same time.
Wow, the shots are so beautiful! It takes my breath away..
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the background info
OOOOh these are beautiful pictures!!!! My mom said she saw the lights for only a few minutes, but me being in VA, I can probably count on never seeing them.
Fascinating. That moose knows more about the stars above than we do.
That’s why he’s smiling.
Nice moose
these are beautiful – I’ve always wanted to see aurora borealis; very lucky

Wow! You take some gorgeous photos! The moose is just precious. I desperately need to get a new camera. I don’t think even with the best camera I could take pictures like you do. Great work! Beautiful blog.
Love the colors, so vivid!
Hi Patrick! I saw that you read my post “The Snob” and I hope you enjoyed my writings. I really love your pictures and it reminds me of my travels in the great Northwest and most recently New England. You’re very talented and an soft-footed to be able to capture a pic of the moose!
The photos of the Northern Lights are breath taking. Truly awesome. I felt very uplifted.
I love them all, amazing , epic images. I also love your nonchalant way of telling us your journey, It’s as if we are just chatting over a garden fence about your travels.
I now want a pet moose. Looks beautiful!

Your work is simply magical.
“The sunrise I was hoping for didn’t quite happen” Hopefully the tradeoff on the Northern Lights made up for it. It would for me, no doubt! Great shots, as usual.
