Larch Valley
Directions
Take Highway 1 from Calgary and turn left at the Lake Louise exit. Then follows the signs for Moraine Lake. The trail head is on the right hand side of the lake.
Background
I took theses photos last year in the Fall on the beautiful Larch Valley hike. It is an easy hike with little elevation gain and amazing views of the Larch Trees. The Larch tree, unlike most coniferous trees, has needles that turn yellow in the Autumn and then fall to the ground. With so many larch trees in the area, the floor of larch valley turns a brilliant yellow.

Thanks to Sarah for putting up with the cold blowing snow for this picture! <3

I like your Photographs…so much..
They are like just….Real…
She does look cold, brrrrrrrr
She does look cold. I love the grain of this photograph
Your photo’s tell stories.
Nice work. Love the hiking photos series.
Wonderful portrait!
I like how she’s holding different camera’s in each, also love the second shot, nice work.
You’re hiking in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Lucky you!
I love Patrick!!!
all your photos look extremely stunning. the subject always glows! just curious if you use a reflector. i am currently trying to improve on my photography skill. would love to get some advices from you if you don’t mind
I like the contrast between the two photos – one charming and light, the other ghostly and zen.
I agree with Dieu. Even Sarah changed her whole persona to match the texture of the photos. I don’t know how you did this Patrick, but it is brilliant.
Awesome! She’s SO pretty. Great pix!
Hope you had a great day! ❤
Beautiful lady
So beautiful
God damn.
Yes, is all i have to say.
wonderful DOF in the top shot, and great portrait in the bottom shot. keep on clicking!
O! just mention of Larch Valley. When I was decades younger we hiked Larch Valley at that special time when the tree needles change colour. And the view of the 10 Peaks. Other times the hike to the tea houses, Lake Agnes and Six Glaciers. What wonderfully blessed country. Your pictures brought me memories. Thank-you.
Beautiful
Gorgeous. I love mountain portraits.
Hi Patrick, is there any pictures that you think would be good for my book, as a front cover, the book is called
Metamophosis, the inward working of Gods Grace….
Many thanks pj
Love them both, but the first one’s superb!
I have so much on my ‘to do list’ but I can’t resist the time I spend on your awe inspiring art work!
NICE!

So where are the larches ?
Definitely one of the great hikes, I was lucky enough to do it a couple years ago when the larches were just turning to their golden colours – amazing!
Beautiful photos Patrick. Very cool.
the B&W photo is amazing…and why i like it is because you can feel the chill…brrrrrr
Wonderful and Sarah you are gorgeous and brave!
…I may have a tiny crush on your girlfriend.
Sarah is a real trooper! we all need someone like that. Way to go Sarah! and Patrick, I really enjoy following your bog, your images are very pleasing to the eye and tell wonderful stories. Thanks.
Beautiful. Love the different moods here. Love all textures you capture in the second and how they contrast with the the “softness” of the mountains.

Used to see Larch trees when I lived in Vermont … loved that they changed color like deciduous trees
Patrick, your pictures are stunning. You really deserve the Lovely Blog Award I have nominated your for. Hope you go on amazing us with your talent.
Love the black & white photo. Rugged woman of the mountains. She looks like one of those mountain top gurus.
I love theses photos, and I love her hat!
The fist is kind of cute, but the BW one is a great portrait. Well done!
Stunning photos – and Sarah looks like Alanis Morissette in the second one!
Great face and great shots – especially the black and white, but the poor girl looks really frozen. Brave soul and body.
Wow. So you mean the sawdust-like yellow on the ground is actually the larch needles? Beautiful portraits. Lovely cosy hat too Sarah
You Travel and Hike. I sit in front of the PC and see all that. Both awe’d and inspired.
This image is amazing.
Sarah is a pretty girl! Lovin’ your pictures!
I love Sarah’s hat The BW is simply amazing.
I love Sarah’s hat. The B/W is stunning. I can almost feel the cold and what was going on in that moment.

Beautiful pics! You are so very talented!
Nice work.

Quite lovely – the scenery and Sarah. Great shots!
Clever use of the depth of field on the lead-in line in that top shot, and a beautiful subject too!

enjoy!
What you can see through that lens is amazing!!! LOVE your work…….

Beautiful (as always) — lovely subject.
I like the black and white picture. The steady pose and the expression which is concentrated on the camera is really compelling with the dynamic of the hair. Great work, I wish I can visit sometimes Canada and travel, hike and explore as you.. or in similar way
Very Nice. I love the B&W one.
Love the black and white of the pretty young woman.

she looks cold in the black and white you can almost feel the wind blowing…
Lovely hiking partner; I love that she’s carrying a single-use camera. She looks much less uncomfortable in the second photo.
Your descriptions are appreciated, too. What qualifies as an “easy hike” for you?
amazing photography! what a wonderful and inspiring blog.
Your photography is awe inspiring.
Fantastic shots, the second should be used in some type of advertising for outdoor gear..:-)
Every time I turn to your blog, you take my breath away. Mitchell Kyd

Hi Patrick! Stunning might be an overused word here but it so accurately describes your photos! Simply breathtaking. I hope that you will consider visiting Mpumalanga in South Africa; we have some pretty amazing views, too
. My dad is a hiking nut and I also have an affinity for climbing uphill. I hope you can join us one day. Than you for visiting my blog.
Great shots. Love the narrow depth of field in the first shot.
The grainy picture is really cool, I like it very much
Beautiful subject, too
Gorgeous Photography. And I love Calgary.
I love Larch trees! The way they shed their needles and fall to the ground is oddly beautiful, like they’re people
Awesome blog. I really wanna go to Canada. Funny your blog suddenly turned up!
Photos are awesome.
Such beautiful portraits.
Both of these photos are great but the second one with the hazy background is wonderul.
it has movement captured and the cold breezes flowing through it. Probably, it doesn’t hurt to
have a beautiful lady to include.
I love the color photograph… the blues and her sweet sweet smile…. such innocence…

Very nice Patrick! Perfect and serene!
The color one makes me smile and go….what a beautiful wood elf he captured….and then the black and white makes my heart clinch with yet another depth of beauty. I really like your work and look forward to it.
Thanks

Beautiful area – love the texture, contrast and movement
Both photographs are simply beautiful!
(I also love her hat.)
Lovely photos – and what a beautiful face. And I’m confessing to jealousy over the knitted blue hood thing. Want one!
Especially like the second picture. Nice work.
Great shots here. Must be nice to have a beautiful model to work with, as well.
I knew “of” larch trees, but never “about” them. Thanks.
That’s right! I never really thought about it before, but there was a tree at my Grandpa’s old house that shed like that. Musta been a Larch! Huh!
Very lovely…both Sarah and the mountains. Nice work. Thank you also for stopping by and reading my blog…I really appreciate it!
The B&W photo of Sarah is very nice. The hair blowing in the wind adds realism. We can see that she was cold. This is what makes a photo so good. The connection can be understand and felt by the viewer. Some of us envy you for the type of mountains you live among. Have a look at my B&W – Yosemite photos. I only wish I had more time to spend there. My son asks when are we going back. Keep taking more B&W photos and thinking about the background light. I look forward to your next outing.
i want to go to canada now!! so gorgeous! you have mad skills!
Wonderful stuff!!
I would enjoy that hike . . the quiet, the peacefulness . .
Very nice, I would enjoy this hike and the surrounding beauty
I love the expression of this young girl. Lovely photograph.
Patrick, you and my favourite author, Lisa Kleypas, share the same poetic quality in your chosen field.
Amazing works!
STUNNING. Absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful photos, especially the last one !!!
Wonderful work !
These are gorgeous! wow, the black and white is especially breathtaking. Thank you for making such beautiful work!
Great portraits. The first one is cute and the second one has a Zen Buddhist feel. Can I just ask what lens do you mainly use for your portrait work?
A poem in light! These are gorgeous.
portraits of people, are far more difficult in Black and white…
~laughing~
but that expression,
priceless…
Such beautiful photos
Aw.. love the black and white, as usual.
Awesome!
Lovelyyyyyyyy.
It’s amazing that you tell everybody your locations and how to get there, as always really awesome work!
These photos are better than what I see in the magazines. Great work
That is an awesome hat/beanie! gorgeous pictures!

These are wonderful. The shot with Sarah on the rock is stunningly beautiful. I love it.
What a beautiful young young woman and you captured her just right!
These photos are beautiful! I especially love the black and white one. I love how you captured both the warmth of the climber and the harsh coldness of the mountains. Something about the combination makes the individual look vulnerable, ephemeral, and dignified.
These photos are wonderful. i like them alot. Where did you purchase the hat from?
I especially like the black and white shot. Bet she loves it.
fantastic portrait
Great blog! Really fantastic photos, great to look at.
Beautiful! Personally, I have been a dabbler in the “black & whites”- breathtaking! Props!
The hat makes it!
Sarah has my respect – that goes way beyond “being a good sport”.
I love this one! beautiful shots!
thanks for passing by my blog!
Your Sara is even more beautiful than the extraordinary scenery you share with us! xoJulia
the gorgeousness!!
the second shot in particular is a great portrait!
