Johnson Lake
Directions
Take Highway 1 from Calgary and turn right at the first Banff exit. From here follow the signs for Johnson lake.
Background
It was still dark when I arrived, with heavy snow falling. This time of year is great for capturing the white snows of winter against the calm reflecting water of a mountain lake. It won’t be long until these lakes freeze over for the winter. Johnson Lake is a small thin lake stretching East to West with the best views for sunrise about a 1km hike from the parking lot. While this particular morning wasn’t going to have any views of a sunrise, I was looking forward to exploring the freshly snow covered landscape.

Let’s go skiing! My son skied at A-Basin today! I plan to hit the slopes this weekend!
It’s beautiful! Reminds me of my home – Sweden.
I like the second one.

All beautiful. Really like the second one and how the path almost invites you to walk into the shot. As if one step forward, and you’re there.
I just bought the second picture with the close-up fence. Beautiful. I’ve decided that I am going to decorate my office with your originals! I think I will vary the frames to make it even more interesting. I’m hoping that as I reflect on the beauty of your work I will be inspired to finish mine. Thanks for being so talented.
Really beautiful photos!
Just Stunning!
.
Your photos are gorgeous. Thanks for taking a peek at my site, too! I’m coming over here anytime my eyes need a vacation from whatever is going on!
Visited the Banff area years ago. Thanks for reminding me of this beautiful area with your lovely photos!
Beautiful!
Snow already. You Canadians are tough.
I really love the perspective of the second photograph.
Very beautiful photos! Thanks!
The lake is photogenic to be sure. That it shares my surname is a big bonus.
Wonderful series of B&W images. I love that “dusting” of snow. I’m looking forward to our first snow this year.
Beautiful! What lens did you use for these? Love them!
I will come back to these often, Patrick. The peace and beauty are extraordinary!
Thank you for sharing more beautiful photos. These make me actually look forward to the snow…well, looking at it anyway
Black and white photos always seem atmospheric. I love Ansel Adams’s landscapes.
these are so beautiful!
Awesome!
stunning details and reflections…love your blog:-) upload colored version too…
The way you captured the snow sticking to the fence was a detail that touched me in the face of the broader magnificence of the scene! Loved these pictures, especially since I do not live where it snows.
These shots are amazing. While admittedly I’m not a fan of winter, if I had such a beautiful landscape to view, I wouldn’t mind it so much.
Beautiful photos. Love that they are in black in white. For me that shows the true beauty in each photo.
Absolutely Divine <3
Stunning!
Very nice! What made you decide to post in Black and White? Beautiful photography.
These are stunning… I love the black and white!
Simply Exquisite….I can feel the cool of the snow as I slide my hand across the railings. I zip up my jacket and pull on my hoodie…..what a vision!
Beautiful images, Patrick. Black and white seems to add to the atmosphere in these doesn’t it?
Corinne
I love these black & white shots. I was first inspired by the beaurty of Ansel Adam’s photography. These photos remind me of his work. You are amazingly talented! Please keep sharing your photos for all of us to admire.
Just loved them! Can’t describe my feelings!
Obviously a great day for B&W and you really made good use of it. Good composition in the first image with the leading line from water to tree top.
Fantastic shots, makes me want to move!!
your photos are always gorgeous! thanks for sharing!
These are amazing! I am a little jealous there’s snow where you are. It’s still suffocatingly hot in Dallas, Tx
Beautiful pictures ! I will always love the black and white pictures! thanks for sharing them!
Really like the second one! Wow!
Even though the photos are black&white, they are so much alive and romantic. Love ‘em!
These are breath taking views of nature that only a true nature lover who really gets themselves out there could find. Thank you for bringing these forward and sharing them with the world!

Really like the b/w. The location is magnificent. You are blessed to live so close to such beauty. bill
So beautiful…
Great photos
Gives me the chills (in a good, anticipation way) just looking at that first photo! Winter is the best time for photo journal hiking!
Great photos and explanation. Reminds me of our trip there in the Spring.
these are just fantastic!
A very stunning set. The reflections on the water are very sharp, which I like very much. The lake also look good for a bit of fishing.
Love these photos! By the way, has anyone ever told you that you bear a striking resemblance to the actor Ryan Gosling? …Just an aside. Your work is fantastic!
Absolutely splendid photographs. Thanks for sharing and also for your visit to my blog.
Black and white photos don’t usually appeal to me as much as color, but the texture you captured in these, from the pine trees to the frost on the hand rails, is just beautiful.
These pics are gorgeous!
These black and white are my favorites of all your photos, so far.
Subj! While these photos are admittedly beautiful, I’m not ready for snow yet. I’m still in Autumn mode!
Haunting, beautiful, and kinda Christmassy.
Shooting in black and white looks really great!
These are lovely.
Lovely!
Your photographs are absolutely gorgeous!
Nice! Reminds me of Wisconsin.

When I see your post in my inbox, I wait until the end of the day to open it. It has become one of life’s little rewards before bedtime, like a delicious chocolate someone has placed on my pillow. Mitchell Kyd
Gorgeous!

Your photos capture the unrivaled sublimity of Winter; you are an incredibly talented photographer, Patrick Latter.
Thanks for liking my post. I hope you could come to Cebu City, Philippines someday. We have a lot of beautiful beaches to take photos from.
Your blog is great and your pictures are amazing. I hope I have the artistic eye as you guys are… GOD BLESS EVERYONE in this blog!
I hear the silence in your photos …. gorgeous all of them – but the top one is my favorite …
Ah snow, a dusting like this is so welcome.
Very nice collection
Today I nominated you for the “Beautiful Blogger Award.” Congratulations.
I think this was one of the lakes I saw around Banff this summer. They’re all so beautiful around there and especially the amazing ones along Columbia Icefields Parkway
Fabulous images
Lovely. Black and white captures a completely different atmosphere, doesn’t it?
great shots !!!
I’m doing a literature search for my PhD, took a little break and followed the link from my blog to your photographs – I feel refreshed to return to the search, might just keep the pics up on my screen to enjoy them a little more, loved them, especially the BW winter ones.
Exceptionally beautiful, Patrick. Thanks so much.
beautiful.
Mighty and beautiful landscape!
Your photographs are INCREDIBLE, Patrick! However I’m glad not to be living in Canada anymore. My opinion of snow is: it’s great to look at through a window or on a computer, not so wonderful in real life! I don’t think I’d miss it if I never saw another snowflake in my life! Here we’re basking on the beach still and enjoying green leaves and palm trees!
Beautiful winter pictures, i love the snow and can’t wait for it to arrive here.
Beautiful photography!
I cannot even imagine snow. It is 78 degrees here and we run our air conditioner through February! These pictures help my family see the beautiful things we may neve experience.
Incredibly beautiful!
Love that second one. Can almost hear the crunch underfoot and cold of the rail on my hand
do you ever go anywhere that doesn’t have magnificent scenery? if so, how ’bout a pic to prove it? haha!
Words can’t even describe how much I love these images! All I can say is…WOW!
Mmm…always wanted an autumn wedding..but your photography makes me want to have a winter wedding. Breathtaking. =)
I can smell the cool, evergreen scent from here (Los Angeles, CA)! It must be a ravishing experience to walk amongst those stately elders.
All beautiful but the second from the top is my favourite!
Very serene. Really like these!
A very, very wonderful photos. Compliments. Orofiorentino from Italy
Beautifully atmospheric photographs -great for writing prompts!
This stuff is insanely great.
I really like the second image..love watching snow fall!
These are some truly beautiful photos. In Los Angeles, we tend to romanticize the North and all its beautiful forests. Your photos do nothing to temper that romanticizing.
I live in Los Angeles as well, and you have me wishing for a white Christmas.
2nd picture down with the fence and the lake reminds me of somewhere I wouldn’t mind living.
you have serious skills. I usually come to your blog for my daily dose of serenity. Thanks.
Ever consider releasing these as 72dpi desktop wallpaper for computers? I think the second image would work well for that.
Awesome shots. Almost doesn’t make me dread winter’s approach!
Great photos, especially the second.
Wow! Great great great pictures. Can you please help me with a doubt, Is it necessary to use a tripod for shooting landscape in linear reflection scenes? How do we avoid aberrations of lens at high zooms? I’m using a bridge camera. Do you have any suggestion?
Just gorgeous
Particularly going for the fence rail…
A serene wow. If possible.
so beautiful…
Wow these landscape photos are out of this world.. I am loving them, i personally love snowfall and have so many memories related to this, feeling nostalgic.. Keep sharing dear Patrick
Canada has been added to the list of places i have to visit some day – beautiful photos
So peaceful; I feel like I’m right on the water
Your photos are beautiful, I was thinking of emigrating to Alberta once I get my degree and this is helping me make my mind up!
These photographs look BEAUTIFUL…. but how much more beautiful it must be in real!
Thanks for sharing

Stunning. I would hazard a guess that Ansel Adams would love these photographs. Thank you for sharing.
I now live in Costa Rica, but these photos remind me of a time when I was younger and lived in Leadville, Colorado. It is a beautiful place.
Each picture is spectacular!

Great pictures! I like the first and second pictures best. Makes me think that it’s a painting.
I really envy your photography skills, Patrick! I guess it helps that you have access to such beautiful scenery, but you manage to capture your surroundings magnificently. Thanks for sharing.
Awsome Pics !!!
You are so very talented!:-)
Sick.
Your photos are always beautiful. It makes me wonder if you live in a prettier place than I do or if I just don’t stop and take notice of what I see every day.
a lonely beauty!
Really stunning photos. I wish I was somewhere that beautiful.
Wowzer! Your photography is absolutely stunning! You are definitely very talented!
Ah, Banff in the snow season. When all of the touri had departed we enjoyed the interlude between summer and winter ski season. The walks in autumn so lovely as dustings of snow accented the textures of the mountains. Your current photo series are like a memory lane of youth for me. Thank-you.
