Vermilion Lakes Sunrise
Directions
Vermilion Lakes is a short 5 minute drive NW of Banff. Take Mount Norquay Rd from downtown towards Highway 1. Then turn left at Vermilion Lakes Drive.
Background
After nearly 4 weekends in a row of cloudy weather and missed sunrises, it finally came together this past Saturday morning. There was still heavy fog in the prairies to the east, which may have contributed to the amazing colours.

Brilliant colors and contrasts. Always great photos.
Stunning! I love the patterns of the colors in the water interspersed with the ice.
Definitely WORTH The wait! Wooooooooow.
That picture is awesome!
*sheer rapture* Gorgeous. Awesome photo.
Lamentations 3:22-23, “The Lord’s mercies indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
This is AMAZING!
Gorgeous!
I love your photos at the best of times but this one is especially incredible. Awesome….
It’s like I’m seeing the country for the first time, and I’ve lived in Alberta my whole life. WOW.
This is one of your most amazing. Incredible. Thanks for showing me things I might otherwise have never known. Take care.
gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous
Absolutely beautiful. This time of year, the differences between Canada and the Gulf Coast are maximized, and it’s such a delight to see them.
One of my favorites!!
Breathtaking…thank you for sharing such beauty.
This is a beautiful pic!
Absolutely breathtaking!
I actually feel the urge to lick this picture?! Just sayin’, is all.
Gorgeous!!!
Simply superb…
I am without words this time. Well done.
Just WOW!
Wow! That is amazing!!
oh wow. this is stunning.
Wow, I see blue sky! Beautiful as always….
Gorgeous! Love how crisp it is and that you can clearly see the ice patterns on the water… well done!
Wow, amazing. And bot photoshopped, right?
On a photo like this I do use Photoshop to blend multiple exposures of the same scene. Today’s digital cameras cannot capture the entire range of light in a single exposure, so this blending is necessary. After that I do the regular contrast and saturation adjustments, followed by some dodging and burning.
Oh, I see. The technical artistry is beyond me, but thanks for the peek behind the curtain. The final result is lovely.
Wonderful colours and composition.
Breathtaking…
I concur!
Vermilion of course, like the color dot adorning the forehead of a beautiful woman, scenic face of nature!… Transcendental photography…
WOW!!
This photo took awhile to load and when it popped up I actually gasped. Gorgeous!
wow. this is truly breathtaking.
Thanks for following my blog. Man, I scrolled down the page and gasped when I saw this picture. It took my breath away and shot me with this pang of desire to behold something so incredible.
Absolutely beautiful and breath-taking!
Stunning shot, nice work
I thought Oklahoma had some nice cloudscapes. You might have convinced me to move to Canada!
Beautiful photos. I can attest to the snow and fog to the east – Calgary saw Sun yesterday for the first time in two weeks! I saw a shadow yesterday and I didn’t know what it was…
This photo makes me want to wake up early to catch the sunrise (and I am not a morning person!) the colours are awe inspiring.
Gorgeous!
The water detail here is impeccable. Mm. So lovely.
Patrick, your photos are consistently amazing but this is downright remarkable.
WOW!!!
This is beautiful!

Thanks again for dropping by… this is really awesome… and btw you look like ryan gosling, just a bit only
Glovely! A real picture, this one! Not like those bizarre photoshopped messes you see. Mind you, the mountain looks a bit “stuck on”. I’ll wager it’s actually a great bit Walmart there instead. And those ice blotches are probably replacing the reflections of invading alien spacecrafts. Other than that, spot on beauty!
absolutely love it!
This literally had me saying, ‘oh my gosh’ aloud at my desk right now! What a shot!!!
Vermillion art. It greeted me in my inbox this morning. Thanks.

Beautiful, I love the striations on the ice.
The way the ice is starting to form, and it’s reflection of the colors almost makes it look like a second sky. Very tight shot.

Hi thanks for adding yourself on my blog
I love your blog, and this photo!! I am currently in Norway in Tromsø, it’s situated 300km inside the Arctic Circle. It just started to become dark in the mornings and soon will be the dark period, so no sun for two months. As this is my second time in Norway, at least I have experienced the midnight sun which is two months of only sunshine (great for people like me who is from South Africa). This photo just reminded me on all my adventures currently here in Tromsø: my 30km hike, flying a plane over the islands, snowboarding at night with only the moon to light up the way. The Norwegians truly have amazing scenery up north.
On the one hand, always great photography… and on the other – man do you ever get to be in some amazing places. Beautiful.
Beautiful!:)
Stunning!
Really nice photography and thanks for coming by one of my blogs.
in addition the structural elements of this image take it to a level beyond the sublime.

You could not ask for a more beautiful sunrise and Colorado. What a nicely planned luck.
wow.
Stunning image!
Vermillion clouds spread over the endless sunrise sky
A world arches above us; a dome of eternality.
The frosted water reflects back a splash of color.
Trees, like leafless twigs, propped agaist a soaring mountain.
A chilly paradise.
This is absolutely gorgeous.
All I really have to say is WOW! Is this what it looks like where you live? I am jealous.

Wanna go here!
This is absolutely breath-taking!
Stupenda!!!
glorious.
Absolutely stunning!
I am in awe. The ice formations are a nice reminder of nature and its perfection. Amazing photographs.
Amazingly beautiful!
This probably tells you simply that lakes rarely freeze over near where I live, but I find the way the ice has built up really intriguing. I think the variety of basic shapes as well as the variety of stunning colours are what make this picture so wonderful. I was instantly jealous of where you live and your skill with a camera.
I went and bought my first D-SLR camera last week, which can take the lenses off my SLR film camera. Once I have got the hang of the settings, I am going to work on trying to take even ONE shot that matches the splendour of your hiking photos of Canada! You should have a permanent job with the Canadian tourism board.
Wow. There are no words….
We are running out of adjectives…let me just say I am blown away by your work., amazing, remarkable, outstanding,
glorious. Thank you!
Heart
wow! breathtaking image!
Beautiful, as always!!
Amazing and real. Nothing like seeing the calm of nature. Thanks.
What lens and filter did you use for this photo?
24-105 at F11, no filters. I will usually take 2 or 3 photos at different exposures and blend them in with gradients using PS. In this case, I only painted back in the overexposed light at the tip of the mountain.
Beautiful picture!!
WoW!!!! I’m speechless!!
