Sarah
These are some portraits I took of Sarah on our trip to Vancouver back in September. Both were taken in the Yaletown area of downtown with natural light only. I generally don’t like using a flash unless I have too.
Taken with a 50mm at F1.2

Taken with an 85mm at F1.4

the first one is disarming and the second one is intimidating! beautiful pictures.
shiva’s shakti is sarasvati
(sarasvati chants to shiva)
“….for I was amazed
Under the tide: but now I breathe again
Aloft the flood, and can give audience
To any tongue, speak it of what it will.”
-Shakespeare
my other self so my brighter beloved
all our other names do us but violence
as i languish lacking your virility
so your anguish quickens my fertility
my singing is nothing without your silence
such wonder as you are not is my grace
wonderment thriving on bitter transgression
astonishment striving for sweeter compassion
such wisdom completes the fullness of space
so lead me on with devious conceits
starlit waters dansing teach my hart bright lies
drown my hart’s truth in your hart’s beautiful eyes
so lead me on with labyrinth deceits
your grace must wander through such unknown fields
is it you or me transfiguring our love
what meaning has a raven without a dove
neither way nor both one ancient hart yields
to more compassion loving more passion
then unbroken harts dreaming are neither mine
nor yours nor both but one hart of harts divine
transfiguration blessing transgression
my pole star your siren reflects your darkest dreams
come sweetness danse upon a flood of bitter tears
such trusting flows beyond truer hopes falser fears
one hart transfigures silver seas into golden streams
my brighter beloved so my darker self
so in such glory our love a blissful river
baptizing stony harts wherein rich goodness lies
one hart gains by such pains wherein shakti dansing dies
light reveals dark love is nothing if not forever

Qu’as tu ? pauvre amoureux…
Qu’as tu ? pauvre amoureux, dont l’âme demi morte
what do you have? poor lovers…
what do you have? poor lovers, whose souls are half dead
sighing such sobs as the wind carries away
i blame you for nothing
your evil is your desire
and your desire gives both pain and pleasure
you have no other rest than this which torments you
and your joy in the pain that gives you sighs
drinking on such bitter-sweetness makes you drunk
and your pleasure bitter and your sorrow sweet

beautiful young lady. I love Vancouver! I take it she was tired of the photo taking by the look on her face on your second shot! lol
Beautiful pictures, and a beautiful woman!
Beautiful girl.
Is the 50mm f/1.2 really worth it? I keep on hearing it has issues with auto-focus but is that people just being too demanding?
I did have to micro adjust the lens pretty significantly but now it’s great. It is still pretty tough to nail the focus at 1.2 though, so you have to patient. I usually use it around F2, so the main advantage for me is the weather sealing, as I’m more often that not in rain/snow in the mountains.
In the shot I just posted, I actually cropped from a much larger photo. So if I had actually been that close I would have shot it at F2 rather than F1.2.
Great info. Thanks.
Totally wonderful She is lovely and fun….Nice photography and portrait! I enjoyed seeing these photos!
Stunning portraits!
The camera certainly loves her. Beautiful.
She has great hair!
Now we know how close is too close for Sarah!

Particularly like the first shot – Sarah’s unforced expression seems to complement the background really well or vice versa. Anyway, great work.

Woah – she’s pretty!
I like the 50mm shot…. not so keen on the other one… Thanks for putting the lens and aperture details this time. I have sent you messages asking about a particular couple of shots and what lenses you used – but you never replied. I have made my decisions without your answer – no doubt my choices will be good ones. I have the canon 50mm f1.2 on my list, so should get some very good portraits…..
Gorgeous picture!
Your photos are beautiful! I am from Canada and you have captured the true beauty we have. Well done!
All the Sarah’s are beautiful
hehe
She’s beautiful. Well done.
Very pretty girl, even when she pulls a face!
Some serious piercings there…I remember when my middle son was about 18 (he’s 33) and he came home with his eyebrow pierced. When I asked why, he said coz it bloody hurts and everyone knows that it hurts, so if they see that I have it they will think that I am hard and not bother me.
Not much one can say to that…I said OK!
Gorgeous shots.
Q-T, with attitude..awesome!
Wonderful natural light, and a great use of the out-of-focus highlight in the background, too.
Have I met Sahara before ??? Freezing up on a mountain! Stunning beautiful young woman and your photos are fantastic. – and she are not afraid of showing attitude neither.
Shes beautiful. Her soul shines on her face through her eyes, and is expressed in her hair.

Patrick, if this is not your day job, ditch the programming, take a leap of faith and do this full-time.
Just suggesting…not an order.
Amazing pics of a beautiful woman!!
The first picture I love more though! She looks ‘natural”!
I AM NOT a photographer, but I enjoy taking photographs, and I don’t like to use flash either. I just thought it was my camera. Don’t I feel smart? As always, amazing shots.
Love this post! She is stunning and you let her natural beauty shine. Perfect.

heavenly bokeh on the first shot. love it! her eyes are captivating
What a beautiful girl. Great shot.
Gorgeous
Beautiful portraits!
awesome shots!
I agree about the use of flash and much prefer the natural lighting. Thanks for sharing ~
Patrick, you pretty much point your camera at beauty all the time, but she’s probably the most lovely of all your subjects. Well, maybe not that girl in the second shot…
Reblogged this on Verde Holistico and commented:
Visit her blog and enjoy the portraits of her trip.
This is a portrait plus ~ wonderful quality of light, fantastic colour in foreground and background and a subject with natural beauty, character and humour. The work of an artist.
Beautiful capture and great subject.

How do u only get focus on her? and not the background?
Now those are some amazing portraits!
Great photos Patrick. They really capture Sarah’s essence. She’s gorgeous!
Beautiful, love the bottom one
Love natural light, but I also love making some really dramatic images with light either natural or artificial. I am in search of my “Sarah”. lol

Lovely!
I soooo agree about not using flash unless you have to! I am nowhere near as good as you, but I learned early that flash is more often a frenemy. ;oD
Sarah is beautiful

I have cfousin´s in Olympia, Washington U.S.A. Not far from where you live.

Thank you for the “Like” and “Following” at my blog “An Attic in Brooklyn”. I love your pic of Sarah and am looking forward to more of your photos.
She’s so beautiful!
What a beautiful girl. She would probably look great if you used an old cell phone camera! Not that you don’t take great shots- you do! She just must have been a really easy subject…well, this is coming out all wrong. I’ll just shut up now and say- Beautiful work!
I can’t tell which is prettier, the photo or Sarah.
Nice portraits! Did you shoot them film or digital? After shooting only b/w film for 25 years, I started seriously working with digital about two years ago. Do you make your settings manually or automatically?
Cute freckles, tousled hair and luscious lips… what’s not to love? I hope you didn’t bore her with your f-stops…
Great straight-on portraits and the light is just perfect. Great job not allowing anything distracting. That’s a fast 50, was that wide-open? I had the Canon f/1.4 for awhile, but it didn’t hold up to my abuse. Have a Zeiss now. She’s a great-looking woman for sure.
