Cali
Portrait of a friend’s dog named Cali. Shot with a 135 at F2- probably my favorite lens. Its incredibly sharp corner to corner, even wide open. It also costs considerably less than the 70-200 F2.8 IS, while at the same time being much smaller and lighter. It’s also black, which draws far less attention if your trying to shoot candidly. Many of my shots from the Shambhala 2012 post were with this lens.

Beautiful dog!
VERY nice!!! I appreciate your work. I would love the “vulcan mind meld” to shoot as well. Blessings!!
Was just up in Vancouver! Which put me in mind of the blog here. Thus: I’m nominating your blog for the Very Inspiring Blogger award. Details are over on my blog: http://jeffreyhowe.wordpress.com/
In the immortal words of Bluto Blutarsky: “This isn’t over until we say it’s over!”
Stunning pic!
i love all of your work, but really really appreciate the dogs. i rescue dogs and place in new homes. great photos capture their spirit!
The portrait is excellent. Gorgeous dog. I love border collies and just did a post about the herding group of dogs in central Texas.
awesome,i want to learn to take REAL photographs. with special lens and such as that. when i take close ups the subject gets blurry. with special lens and cameras and the knowledge on how to use them it’s amazing the photo possibilities.
Makes me smile to look at this dog– you captured her happy personality!
Awesome shot! Cute dog

I don’t know what I like more: the dog or the photo. Maybe both of them.
Congratulations!

Beautiful shot of a beautiful dog. Love how the light glows softly on the white on her muzzle and chest and just the right sparkle in her eyes.

I want to put the picture on my desk and tell everybody he’s mines! Good looking dog. Captured the right way by lens not net.. Great work
That is one beautiful photo and a very cute dog. Your friend is lucky to have a great photographer for a friend!
Love the pic
Truly beautiful…
What do you recommend as a fairly simple, relatively affordable camera for someone who wants to capture good shots, easily upload material, and choose between photos or video? I’m distressed to be thinking about getting a new camera and I want to be sure that if I do invest themoney I get the right one. I know this is a wide-open question but thought it worth asking. Thanks!
I LOVE the curled tongue capture! Gorgeous.
stunning shot! That lens is a cracker.
Magical portrait.
I put my little Doxie on the blog recently–not as great an image as this!
Sweet. Dogs are so “real” and alive with wonder.
beautiful!
Great dog – difficult to get the animal portrait just right but you did it! Kudos.
LOVE this. Of course I am a dog lover, BUT love the b&w, which I’ve also done with some success when photographing our dogs. Sweet image.
Love the photo. Cali is so cute!
PUPPY!!!!!! She’s really lovely.

Hi Patrick,
Love this photo. Does your lens lock into the focus on the eyes or do you find that you have to take a lot of shots to get one in focus. I always have the darndest time trying to take a photo like this! I am going to have to investigate this lens! Just beautiful!
I love B&W photography and this is a extraordinary….The moment i saw this i knew I’m going to follow your blog
You captured the personality of this beautiful dog brilliantly. Thanks for following my blog
Good puppy! Great expression, too. I enjoy perusing your photos. There’s a crispness to them I like. And I don’t know anything about photography, but suppose I know what I like when I see it, no?
aaww…love the tongue curled…such an alive photo patrick.
I can’t stop looking at this photo. I wish I could take a photo of my cat that looks this good! Stunning.

Beautiful dog portrait. I love the way you captured that adorable curl to his (her?) tongue.
Wow–every time I visit, whatever the subject, your photos give me such a great feeling.
Love this one!
Love it! A wonderful capture! xoJulia
Seems silly that out of all of your photographs I choose to comment on the photo of a dog. In truth, the dog’s name (and title of the post) caught my eye. Of course some of your landscape shots are out of this world AMAZING, but those seem to garner a significant amount of traffic and commentary. So here I am paying homage to the photographic underdog…no pun intended.
And as response to the masterful capturing of the hound, I say, “Nice tongue!”
Cali is so adorable! I would love to take a picture of my dogs like this!
All of your photos are so remarkably taken. They are all absolutely beautiful. I am a huge dog person, so naturally I love this one of Cali… But the sunset, fog, … honestly all of them are just stunning!
love this photo… love that you left in black and white… Also, Cali is beautiful…
Just gorgeous.
