Haleakala Crater, Maui
The roughly 1 hour (2 hours if you leaving from Wailea) drive from sea level, follows a winding switch back that ends at 3055 m (10,023 ft). Try to arrive at least an hour before sunrise if you want a parking spot at the upper lot. I arrived even earlier as I wanted to get some shots of the night sky.

Yes that temperature gauge is accurate, it was 47f and that’s with out the high winds. More than a 25f difference compared to beach I had left earlier that night. Remember to dress warm! You might be standing out there for up to an hour.
With the full moon that night it was easy to see in all directions while still retaining some of the night sky’s stars.

There is also a nearby observatory that almost seems like it was light with day light rather than moonlight.

The best sunrises at this altitude happen when there are low lying clouds for the sun the highlight.

Breathtaking!
Just stunning!
Wow, heavenly!
These are fantastic photos! Did you use a filter for the sunrises?
Very nice – thanks for taking us along on your trips like this.
So beautiful!
Just spectacular, Patrick!

Amazing!!!
You take me to a different world every time
Love the shot of the island from above, and that last pic… wow. Looks like the sun is coming out of the clouds. Fantastic!

You are just too good my friend. Too good!!
The first and last photo…mind blown!!
I especially like the sun hanging from the sky – just amazing!:)
Wow, impressive shots
I’ve been to Maui many times (and seen my share of its sunrises!) but never to Haleakala… all I can say is I want to see LOTS more of your pictures!
Thank you. I had waited for your Haleakala Crater pictures since you started the Maui sequence. I knew they would come. GREAT pictures which took me back to November1987, when I did the night trip up , watched the sunrise and hiked down the crater in the morning. I was then prowd owner of an EOS 650 and the light pollution was less.
stunning!
Patrick you truly have the dream job.
beautiful. very beautiful.
Waaaah! I want to see a sky like that >.< It looks so pretty!
as always, they are lovely and brilliant shots!
I see you’re in my part of the world. Love the shots. And yes, it’s cold up there. Lots of tourists take a blanket from their hotel rooms to keep warm. Great idea to go early and catch the night sky. I’ll do that next time.
Wonderful Photos!
loved the first pic…Ofcourse, rest too are brilliant!
Spectacular! And that’s dedication — to get up that early and take pictures in cold conditions like that.
Absolutely stunning photographs….just WOW!

Hi, I promoted your blog on mine this morning. I get an email each time you publish, and thoroughly enjoy what you do. It’s the Blog of the Year award if you do such awards … but the value, I think, is that you get a (somewhat) broader exposure as I promote you to a wider audience. In any event, thanks for what you do!
Beautiful Work! Thanks for visiting my blog.
Wow . . . great pictures!
Absolutely stunning!
Gorgeous shots and the one that struck me most was the ‘dash shot’ – only because I am an “eleven person” – haunted and stalked continually by 11s – all the time, all throughout the day – have been for years – have no idea what it means. And here they are – Again!!
Great shots
Absolutely freakin’ fabulous photos! (Sorry, I got a little excited there!) That last photo… you should be getting paid A LOT of money for that one. It really draws you in. Really spectacular.
Confession: when I first saw a small version of your first photo in my reader, I thought “wow, I didn’t even know they made cameras with back-lit controls !”. That’s right, I thought your car’s main console actually was… a camera !
I am endless source of amazement to myself…
The clouds, the clouds! Love the dashboard shot, too.
absolutely breath taking. I had to say wow out loud while looking at every picture.
Absolutely stunning! You capture the world in such a unique and creative way — to view your photos is to look at the world anew. What an inspiration to photographer all over the world. Keep up the great work!
Great photos. I keep trying to get those shots of the sunrise, but mine don’t come close to looking as good as yours!
gorgeous pictures as always
Wow, thank you! I’ve never seen anything quite like the second photo – love the dawn and night at the same time – and I like that you included the first picture.

I grew up on Maui. Love your blog!
You drove those hairpin curves at night? Yikes! Gorgeous pictures – totally worth it! xoM
My husband and I made it up to the top just to miss the sunrise. So glad we got to see it through you.
Too bad we can’t meet up. You photos are great. You have hit all the places I’ve been. I headed out to the top of the summit at 3 am to get the best angles to shoot the morning sun in all it’s levels prior to sunrise. I’ve lived here for 6 months and I’m still amazed at the beauty that is all around.
great shots! A sunrise there is something everyone should see in person.
Stunning – simply stunning!
That last one is like a spectrum of sun and cloud – - – wonderful
An absolutely gorgeous series. Love that starry sky and sunrise.
Breathtaking – and worth getting up for! Well done!
Incredible. I hope to see something like this soon enough! Also, thanks for following my blog
These pictures are beautiful! Some of them are what I imagine heaven would be like.
That daybreak with the starry sky … is so stunning. All photos are beautiful, but .. that is my pick of a stunning bunch. The one inside the car tickle me too.
You always have such beautiful pictures!!! It’s so nice to visit to see such beauty!
I couldn’t get my wife to wake up for the drive up. We went up later in the morning. As it turned out the day we went up, there was nothing but a cloudy sunrise … just plain gray and we didn’t miss too much. The ride down was in part, terrifying. A section on the way down was covered in a cloud with visibility not much beyond the windshield wipers. Going downhill on a curvy mountain road at under 5 mph is tough. You end up wondering if you will run off the road, into a car, or have one run in to you. Still, this is a site to not be missed.
absolutely breathtaking.

You are an amazing photographer!
You captured it just as I remember it. Beautiful.

I’ve driven there and although I wanted to see the sunrise, my companion traveler was too scared with the drive. It took some convincing to drive during daylight. Amazing pictures!

Seriously mate, i’m running out of superlatives and synonyms to laud you with! That second one looks like the aftermath of a volcanic eruption or something!
EPIC (haven’t used that one yet)
A poetic visual tapestry. Amazing!
Thanks for following my blog Patrick, I’ve since checked out your photos and they are fabulous! I used to live in Banff and LL so I viewed them with great interest! And I went to Maui last year and it was foggy at the top of Haleakala so it is awesome to see these photographs of yours! Thank you!
We were there in May! Same thing! Beautiful sunrise…but a lot of clouds. You were able to capture some gorgeous shots! Well done!

Just came back from a week on the Big Island to these Beautiful photographs taken so very near my Maui home by the extremely talented Patrick Latter. I think I buy one and hang it in the living room to remind me of the peace and tranquility Upcountry now that I’m living in ‘the big city’ of Honolulu.
thanks so much for sharing this Sabrina…. at the moment, Hawaii is SO VERY TEMPTING…

These photographs are stunning. My favorite is the second, of the mountain and the city below.
Incredible shots as always Patrick!
Amazing images from a stunning place – would love to visit.
As I absorb these shots, I wonder how you feel about them. I’m nearly finished revising a book, and certain passages make me slightly giddy; did I really write this, it’s pretty darn good. Yet, I know it’s a gift, something I am blessed to do. These shots make me appreciate my sight, and your talents. Thank you so much for taking them, and sharing them.
The second photo in your post has a very sci-fi feel to it. Amazing!

Amazing! In the last picture – it appears as though the sun is descending down through the atmosphere.
Stunning and absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing
I don’t know if I could get up and go out into the cold that early for anything, but I’m glad you did. Wonderful pictures, as always!
That final shot in particular is absolutely breathtaking! For a moment I couldn’t tell if it was clouds or the sea, and you just don’t see the sun captured like that. Thank you so much for sharing!
incredible, so inspiring and breath taking
Feels like you are actually there. Amazing. Thanks for following my blog btw.
Breath taking!
Stunning! You might be interested in a photo blog of Perth that I have started. Photographs are not nearly as stunning as yours, but give you a day to day view of Perth and Western Australia. perthphotos.wordpress.com
Your stuff is very, very good, I find it hard to take in how good the images are, that’s not to say there aren’t plenty of great photographers about. Cameras only capture what already exists (maybe with a little bit of tech tweaking occasionally) they don’t create the imagine but what they do is allow gifted people like you to share what ‘ordinary folk’ may never get the opportunity to see, I mean see, see, I think most people do not take/get the opportunity to fully appreciate just how,…..I can’t think of a decent word for it?…neat, cool, brill, weird….. ah!, let’s try fascinating, our reality is, all that surrounds us. Please capture as much of everything as you can and show us it.
I’ve nominated you for The Very Inspiring Blogger Award. http://miriamtroxler.com/2012/12/11/the-very-inspiring-blogger-award/
Great composition as always.
