Photographic Information
All shots were with a 24mm at F1.4 and iso 12800 handheld. The only issue become actually focusing the camera in such low light. I would get somebody to hold up a flash light and use this to focus and then turn the flash light off when I was ready to shoot. To ensure sharpness with such low shutter speeds, I would take 4 or 5 shots in rapid succession to increase the chances of getting a shot that was usable.
Story
We arrived at the Goat Creek parking lot just before midnight and began getting our freshly rented skis ready to go.

The full moon made for an eerie almost daylight like appearance to the landscape. The moon light was so bright that it was casting strong shadows across the trail.

Despite the cold temperatures, all the physical activity had us shedding layers only a few km into the trail.

Reaching the largest bridge on the trail marked the end the downhill section. From here it’s mainly up hill until you reach Banff.

The further we made it in, the greater the accumulated snow fall seemed to be. There were huge clumps of snow still hanging from the low lying trees.

Adam officially won the coveted most frozen beard award.

This is AMAZING.
Amazing pictures! I can feel the calmness.
It looks cold, but VERY beautiful!
All these pictures are amazing! Looks like an awesome trip.
Wow, looks like you all had fun! I actually tried cross-country skiing last weekend while up in the White Mountains of Arizona. I was terrible at it, but the trails had deep snow and were not groomed. It was almost as beautiful as your trek into the snow. It’s funny you mentioned about shedding layers quickly even though it was cold. I did the same thing! I mainly went into the woods on skis to get some photos of the wildfire burn areas.
Beautiful photos, Patrick! I always enjoy your work!
Oh wow – what a beautiful night captured with some stunning photos. Breathtaking.
Absolutely beautiful, captivating and spooky too. Your photo skills are excellent!
Looks like fun!
Absolutely incredible!
LOL! Oh dear. That full moon looked a little vulnerable in all that beautiful pristine, freeeeezing snow! Wonderful photos otherwise
I have to look twice at all your photos because such places do not exist in the world I am familiar with. Gorgeous.
Spectacular photos. That had to be a very fun outing as well.
That second to last photo I love.
Absolutely breathtaking. I’ve never thought of putting “skiing” and “moonlight” together. Fantastic job!
Stunning images! I want snow like that.
These are amazing shots
And the moon is really bright!
wow…absolutely stunning photos!!! Even though I live in “snow country” I’m not a fan of winter/snow, but your photos show both in all its beauty…
Truly awesome. I love this post. Wish I was out there with you. Maybe next year. Thanks for the camera info. I was going to get a Nikon 500 as I’m just starting out but maybe I’ll be a little braver.
Nice “exposures”, Patrick.
(that’s my lame full moon joke…)
Absolutely gorgeous images, as always.
and even a ” full moon” … what a beautiful adventure to start the year with
Beautiful photos!
Gorg!
Great Captures!!!!
You make me wish I was there! Great post.
Such a challenging adventure and very beautiful pictures!
oh wow amazing, do you know the trail well hence it seems to ‘lightweight’? Why mid nite start?
Stunning shots, especially since they are all handheld.
Absolutely LOVE this post today, Patrick. We’ve never been night skiing but it looks wonderful!
The quality of the light in these photos is truly beautiful. I especially like the way you captured Orion.
Nice butt!
Fantastic images, story and journey!
Gorgeous photos! Looks like fun — Happy New Year!
I’m so jealous! These are magnificent!
Looks like epic fun! I love the Banff area, but have never done any nordic there. Thanks for sharing!
Almost made me feel nostalgic for the snow, for my skis…
Beautiful shots. Looks like a picture post card. Thanks for sharing.
And I just noticed the “full moon” shot!!! LOL
You’re right. It is like daylight! What beautiful pictures.
Love the moon picture the best.
Happy New Year! I’m amazed at how bright these photos are – it really looks like the middle of the day. So, what did you do once you arrived in Banff at 4 a.m??
extraordinary work ~ well done
Cheeky…
Amazing clarity considering the high ISO and the focussing difficulties. What a beautiful night too for this journey. -20C is cold enough, I’ve skied in -25C in the Alps and that was painful. There’s a disincentive to go fast because you then get the added wind chill!
I love the photos, very professional.
That’s way too cold for me. I can live vicariously through your post. Wonderful photographs as well.
You guys are radical about adventure, that’s for sure! Love it!! Thanks for sharing all the great shots – very well done. I’m amazed at all the light cast by the full moon. Beautiful.
Amazing shots, especially the moon shot.
Great shots, except the last moon shot did nothing for me (except make me laugh).
Oh my! These pics are flawless; especially the first one. Love this!
A couple of years back a friend and I went cross-country skiing in the full moon. The conditions were similar and the night was cold. Skiing across the frozen lake and back was exciting and an unforgettable experience.
Wow, your pictures are, as usual, incredible. I love the long shot of walking through the heavily-laden trees. Like something from a fantasy movie. Wasn’t it Ansel Adams who said you take a thousand thots in hopes of getting just one good one? I think your story of focusing at night made me think of that, but you don’t seem to have problems with finding a great shot. Beautiful! I always love coming here to see your work. It inspires me.
Beautifully serene!
stunning!
This looks like a film set – magical. The other full moon is not quite so magical
Wow, I would LOVE to do that! What amazing images…and yes, the shadows were awesome! Love a full moon (wink!)
Beautiful shots. Hard to believe it’s not daylight
I wish I could ski, Banff is beautiful.
I love photographs by moonlight!
Beautiful captures!
i do this quite often (snowshoe also), but have never captured such vibrant and beautiful pictures!
patrick these pictures are rocking my world! it’s SO light. and people look like toys!
Wow, it’s like a fairytale!! I particularly like the third and second from last ones but what fantastic quality, including of the people. Wish I was there. Actually, no, I feel I WAS there. Thanks
Looks magical! and fun:)
These are wonderful!
These are all incredible but I think I like the second to last photo best. Although the last one does give it steep competion.
Stunning photographs … especially that one about halfway down … I have only done cross country skiing once and I loved it. This looks such an awesome adventure, thanks for sharing it.
Beautiful! Love your pics!!
Very cool — and very well documented. . . .
Beautiful!
STUNNING! How can the moon be so gloriously bright!?!?! AH! so satisfying. I can feel the cold, and see the air. Beautiful work. (Creation and yours!)
http://sophiebowns.wordpress.com/
Wow! Looks like such an amazing adventure !
Beautiful!
That must have been an amazing experience. Beautiful shots … you do get around!!
Truly AWEsome.
These are astonishing! Thank you for sharing!!!
Incredible moonlight pictures. Not the “full moon” one though
– must’ve been incredibly cold, poor devil.
Fabulous photos
I’m so surprised at the lack of grainy images too, with such a high ISO speed. Excellent!!
Wonderful nocturnal photos. Moonshiner must have felt the cold by the looks of the trees. There’s a Banff up North of Scotland but have not been there as I visit mostly England having been born there although Skye and Alloa are Heavenly Hills. Going Alloa tomorrow again. Trees out my back were covered like this last year but seeing the whole picture and the moonlit skies is priceless. You should have an Exhibition. Thanks for sharing these. I see I’ve a long way to go photography-wise but working on it. Great work!
Absolutely gorgeous! And now I know how to spell toque.
These photos are truly amazing I love the first picture. It’s my favorite
Hope you got my message about nominating you for the 2012 Blog of The Year. You are an amazing photographer and I always look forward to your posts. Here’s the link … just in case it got lost among all the awesome comments you get
http://thewishfactor.wordpress.com/2012/12/31/the-last-holy-crap-moment-of-the-year/
You must be part-arctic animal to constantly be taking these beautiful pictures in the frigid cold and not freeze to death!:)
I would just like to say that I’m jealous, both of this ski trip and of your ability to document it.
Seeing the snow covered landscape it seems such an alien yet beautiful place to me, coming as I do from a warmer clime. Beautiful photos as always. Amazing how much light you have captured in these when it was the middle of the night.
That last picture looks like Yukon Cornelius.
Awesome! I thought BC was the most beautiful place in Canada! Now I need to go to Banff – how do you deal with temps and the camera when you brought it back inside after being in the cold so long? Were you shooting high iso? Assume you weren’t carrying tripod . . .
These are fantastic photos. Your work would fit in so well in Travel & Outdoor magazines… Love your work.
Maria
Beautiful stuff! The last picture is a great portrait. Such sharpness in low light! I will have to try your flashlight trick at some point.
These are awesome photos. It makes we want to take up cross country skiing. Did the guys in your group get annoyed with you stopping to shoot pics?
Great work with the low light and handheld. Impressive results.
No words appropriate for how amazing these captures are. I will dream tonight of being there. Not on skis mind you, but there nonetheless. Glorious, peaceful, amazing!! Margie
P.S. Love the shot of the full moon, LOL!
Ha! Full moon! Lovely!
Nicely done. Very cool indeed. DS
WOW!
Very nice shots!
Thanks for sharing your wonderful adventure and beautiful photos! What a lovely trail. The tall trees covered with snow with the moonlight are magical.
LOL – On the full moon!
What a great adventure. I particularly like the photo with Orion visible.
YOur photos are always amazing. I promise I m buying
There are few words that are not overused to express my overwhelming awe. Thanks for sharing these unique and gorgeous pictures!
Oh, my goodness, these are gorgeous . . . well, most of them.
Blessings always….
I’ve skied along that same trail! Great photos man.
Never bored seeing your works…., really beautiful.
Warm wishes,
mei
It is beautiful, extraordinary! even the one with someone’s butt showing
I’m so glad I saw your comment. I had to go back and check!! In my awe of the gorgeous scenery, I missed the wonderful mooning
haha! I had to go back twice to be sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks since nobody else seemed to hav commented…
Your photos are absolutely wonderful! I love the way you capture the stars in the second the last photo here.
Gods, these are lovely. I don’t miss much about the cold, but I do miss x/c skiing on the full moon. We did it quite a bit, over the years in eastern Maine. So lovely – quiet – sacred, really.
JUST SO WONDERFUL.
Brilliant….I love the high ISO, grainy texture of these shots!
Your work is Amazing. You seriously inspire me to take better photos
This must be awesome….
I think the majority can agree that the full moon was the highlight. Haha. All joking aside, these pictures are gorgeous! Good work!
Wow, Just BEAUTIFUL!!!
These shots are stunning. It almost looks unreal.
Patrick,
The “” almost made me fall off my chair. Hilarious. Thanks for sharing!
mmkng
Wow, unbelievably beautiful photos! I’ve never seen snow so I really enjoyed these. Thanks for sharing
Absolutely stunning photos!
This was probably freaking cold, but worth it. I guess you guys were now and then really quiet and just looking… The shots really transport the silence and beauty of the night!
Thanks for the photo tips…that looks like a really cool thing to do. Gorgeous photo’s. Do you worry about bears? I just got an Canon S110 for Christmas…using Auto for now until I can learn all about setting the ISO, shutter speed etc….I have so much to learn but wanted a camera to grow into and learn some technique.
We always have bear spray. It’s the winter however and most of them are asleep under mounds of snow. Spring and fall are the worrisome times but this is a fairly busy trail. The conservation officers also do an amazing job tracking the bears and notifying the public. Everyone starts somewhere! I used a point and shoot for years until I was interested in photography.
AWESOME!
wonderfully captured photos!
Gorgeous photography as always! They’re breathtaking! And that’s one hell of a way to welcome the new year! Happy New Year! and a bounty of success for you
These photos are absolutely gorgeous! They seem surreal!
What a great time to spend with friends and lovely of you to share

Magical photos …. this is what winter is about at it’s best. Thank you so much for sharing.
What amazes me is how much these pictures look like daylight. I would expect modern technology to be able to record moonlit images with clarity and contrast. Unexpected is all the color.
This is like being in a dream, I love the photos! Great job.
Holy Moonlight, Batman! Oh, the beauty of it.
booty! happy new rotation, imagine. out of 200-400 billion stars in our galaxy…we’ve traveled around one of them in full rotation. hope you had an amazing time, made me kinda jealous. also, nice ass shot.

Haha it’s a little harder to snowboard and carry a camera! Thank you!
Full moon, indeed, Patrick. Thanks for the glorious photos. As a former skier, you took me back to a special time in my life where snow and icy beards brought joy to my heart.
More fun than a barrel full of greased monkeys!
I love your pictures. It feels so real that I just think I could reach out and touch the snow. Wow!
Patrick these are great shots. What an exciting run it must have been. Your work is breath taking. All the best.

Wow! 12800! Really nice job and such crisp images.
And how nice that the clouds listened to you when you asked them to spend the night elsewhere!
Next full moon here on Lake Huron I’ll have to see what I can “see.”
Keep up the great work.

I wish I could visit all these places where you go. Awesome Pics.
So jealous of your experiences. Keep ‘em coming so I can vicariously live through them haha!
This is so fun! I love getting to experience your adventures through your photography. Do you follow any other photography blogs? Its one of my favorite art forms to admire and would love suggestions on some other good photography. Thanks!

Great Job!
I only love the snow when I am tucked up in warm winter woolies and a roaring fire is heating every corner of the house, and I’m peering out of the window as warm as toast. But I could look at these photos forever. Absolutely amazing!!
Love these images – it’s like another world!
ha ha…beautiful images, but…..Ha…too funny
Patrick, these images are magical!! Number 10 is my fave, although the ‘full moon’ is a close second!
I don’t know what’s more awesome: the photos, the landscape, or your life. All of the above is the most logical choice. Also, I never got to say thanks for following my blog(s) and giving me thumbs up on my own photography. So, thank you.
Wonderful photo…what an amazing amazing experience it must have been. Wish you a very happy New Year.
You take such incredible photos. So clear even at night!!

cool photos! looks like an amazing adventure.
Love how the context makes the stars look like falling snowflakes
Great experience and photos. A group of my rescue team members and I snowshoed to a yurt by Leadville,Colorado at night. The yurt cooks meals for a very limited number of late night trekkers. We then trekked back out around 11 pm. Fun to be outside when you know most people are getting ready for bed
Oh, it looks so cold, but you got some great shots!

Really great pics! Enjoyed them all, but have to say the one of Adam looking Heavenward has got to be my fave. Really great capture in that pic! Perfect moment and expression (hope it wasn’t him realizing an avalanche had begun)!
I second that emotion about the one looking heavenward. These pictures are stunning.
Great shots Patrick, captured the Winter Wonderland perfectly.

The moon is so bright, that you forget the photos are at night. That’s an adventure you will all remember.
Wow! Some may say that it is sort of “one in a lifetime” experience, but I guess for guys in Canada it is not a big deal. Great pics!
wow ! your pics are amazing ! how I wish i could experience snow.
I agree with “cyardin”! Who needs sleep when you could be seeing and doing that!! Judging from the photos, you are all considerably younger, but I would kill (figuratively) to do that and I’m in good to pretty good shape
Your pictures are always great, but this makes a girl really think about it. Amazingly beautiful!!
Felix Homogratus, Dimitri Chavkerov Rules! You pay us we post good about us!!
Pretty incredible. I’ve always wanted to learn how to cross country ski. Going to have to save up for next winter (along with all the other cool things I want to do this year lol).
I was wondering why the sky shot so blue? It’s beautiful. Was that the actual condition or coaxed out with a bit of post processing?
Wow, those photos of Goat Creek are amazing, I must visit this place.
AMAZING…. really! seems like a painting, the light is so incredible, almost like in a dream!!!! wonderful…. thanks for sharing!
Beautiful photos…that appears to be a truly awesome hike!
Gorgeous Photos, absolutely gorgeous! I think you’ve inspired my next illustration.

Jaw dropping awesome photos! And all that snow looks wonderful on another hot, muggy Queensland day
I’m not the adventurous, athletic type, but looking at these pictures makes me think maybe I’m missing out – -
Awesome Pics!
These are beautiful. There is something about snow under a clear sky that only a picture can describe. Words would never do it.
These photos are absolutely stunning ! I will revisit and enjoy them time and again.

Magnificent.
awesome adventure by moonlight – & great shots, too.
You did a wonderful job of capturing moonlight in the snow. It’s so difficult to convey the beauty of these moments on film, because of lighting issues. These photos are beautiful.
Banff is on my bucket list, and I have to say these pictures are make much more jealous than I previously was. Great work, Keep it up. =)
