Abstract Trees
Photographic Information
To achieve this effect all you need is a longish shutter speed, 1/20th in this case, and a short controlled pan of the camera in one direction while the shutter is open. To get a long shutter speed during the day without blowing out the image, use the lowest iso possible and the smallest aperture possible, something like f/22.
This first image was taken with no pan of the camera and normal shutter speed.

And now with with quick pan upwards with a long shutter speed.

this looks like a painting. love your blog.
OH My this is mad good! LOVE!
do you do much in post-processing?
I love the texture of them! Beautiful!
interesting effect
It’s kind of similar in effect to taking photos out of the side window of a moving car, only with a lot more control. It’s a lovely, dreamy result.
this is awesome
Gorgeous!
Wow loveeeeee the abstract trees! Those are beautiful
I tried this technique a few weeks ago, you can see the results here http://wp.me/p2sEYy-tG.
Very cool, Patrick.
Dear Patrick,
To computer scientists like myself, an abstract tree is a mathematical representation of anything branching with a root. Your second image shows a ghostly bunch of branchless things instead.
With kind regards,

WOW! What beautiful pictures!
Love the dramatic effect of the second photo.
Very cool!
very cool!
Oh, wow! These are amazing!
wow patrick that is amazing and very hard for me to look at!

I was just giggling when I read how you make the effect of the second picture.. I just sneeze and woosh there is my abstract picture taken unintentionally.. glad to know I can do it on purpose and look really awesome.
Patrick, I’m sorry to say that I find that particular image just makes me giddy!
Very cool…. I love the way you did that. I wish I had more time to experiment with mine… Lovely, almost magical looking!
Very nice.
Nice effect; as if it was fast-drawn with colored pencils. Funny thing: they still feel like trees. Can you pan so fast that any connection with the original subject is gone? Cheers, harrie
Love this! I was just playing around in the dark with the same idea last night. Keep shooting!
Reblogged this on Tom Clark and commented:
Pretty cool effect. This blog is worth following if you need any tips or tricks with Photography.
It looks like a painting…
Tress fascinate me so I love both of them. The second one is very Spiritual looking. These two totally different effects from one photo are what I love most. Great thinking and work!
Trees fascinate me. I love both of these, the latter having a Spiritual effect as if it’s on the parallel universe to us. Great capture. Love both.
Like the cool effect of the pan.
I’d love to paint this
That is a great winter piece, I like the effect!
I’ve tried this technique myself and been impressed with what is possible with some trial and error and patience. This is an excellent example of this skill – winter really suits it too.
Lovely!
This is quite similar to most of Hank’s photos. He calls them “Huh? SQUIRREL!!” moments but thinks they’re pretty neat anyhow. Thanks for all the great images–it’s nice to revisit the north via your postings.
Hay i have a pic like that ….except mine was an accident as i was in a car driving bout 70 km at the time with a reg ordinarly film camera lol
Love the abstract trees! Nice job!
as of late, reading a lot of poetry by Ashbery (who oft writes of trees in very abstract ways), ergo, if i could hit the like button a dozen times… i would. cheers ~ a
Fantastic effect!
Very Cool effect!
ooh fun! adding this to my list of things to try
Loving that second one… very effective

Feel a little like I’m drunk and have taken my glasses off when I look at the second
Beautiful pictures!
I like both of these shots. They evoke different responses. I would prefer them to be presented in separate blogs so that each can have its own space..
You see some great abstracts made this way. After looking at 10 or so, I saw one where the photographer was able to get one tree in the foreground perfectly focused. I don’t know whether the tree was put in w/photoshop or what, but I realized then that these make great backgrounds. Now I’m ruined for seeing them by themselves.
Dreamy and beautiful.
The abstract shot is magnificent making a powerful statement about the presence of even the sparsest of trees.
Wow! Excellent stuff!
ciao! takes my breath away.
