Paint Splash Photography

Story

I’ll start by saying that there are no Photoshop tricks in these images; the only adjustments done are for the regular exposure/contrast stuff. I have a small write up on how I did this just below the photos.

The setup consists of a small computer speaker, in which I removed the protective foam and covered the front in black thin exercise rubber. I then sat this on a table with the speaker facing upwards. From here, I had a flash at 45 degrees from the camera and set to the lowest output for a short flash duration. This helps in freezing the motion of the drops. Then, I would put 2 or 3 drops of different coloured paint on the rubber and when I was ready, play a short burst of low frequency bass noise. I did this maybe 40 times while taking photos each time before I had a few shots I liked. You want to ensure that you have a small enough aperture in order to have enough depth of field to capture the majority of drops in focus.

This reminds me of Neil Harbisson’s “color-listening” creations. I think you’ll get a kick out of his Ted Talk lecture (not to mention the fact that he looks like Don Johnson in ‘Miami Vice’) http://www.ted.com/talks/neil_harbisson_i_listen_to_color.html

This is really cool! I’ve always wanted to try doing something like this. There’s a (very creative) tv commercial here in Australia for a tomato pasta sauce in a jar and the way they make the sauce is using fresh tomatoes and HUGE speakers – these photos reminded me so much of that. It’s my favourite commercial ever (here it is if I make no sense http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq9BTgKCvD4).

Anyway, before I got excited about speakers and tomatoes, I meant to ask you what lens you used for this – I’m guessing either the 24mm or 35mm 1.4??

I’m a wanna be photographer- I enter my photos on a site called Pixoto.com You would do really well on there. It’s a contest- you can win money if your as good as you happen to be- otherwise- it is an effective way to get your work seen by a lot of people. This is my profile page on there http://www.pixoto.com/janna.morrison.10 I’m only good at photographing Butterfly Koi. I only started taking the abstract photos when I ran out of fish photos to enter. Click “images” at the top of the page to access the rest of the site. Its global and free.

Spectacular! It was great that you shared your set-up info but I’m sure there is an essential ingredient missing in getting these results — YOU. This reminds me of all the great recipes that get handed down and passed around; there is just no replicating the results. No matter how hard you try, you are always missing that fundamental WOW factor when you try to duplicate it. It is like getting a photocopy of a photocopy. The magic comes (or disappears) with that unique infusion from the creator. Mitchell Kyd

    So creative! (:
Sometimes I wish I could appreciate art more. I don’t have the “technical background” if you will, and the most I can really say about art when I see it is “I like it!” or “It’s so beautiful” or “Oh…I don’t know what to think.” But I guess that’s what’s so wonderful about art – it’s up for interpretation. I may not be able to understand the work that went behind creating it, but I can at least feel some sort of emotion when I see it? MEH I don’t know. All I wanted to say was that this is gorgeous and I wish I could say more…but I can’t LOL
    Thanks for sharing! (:
