Puppies

Pet Photography Tips:

  • Try to shoot at eye level, this gives you a more unique perspective. Lying down on the floor will show how they see the world.
  • Always try to ensure that the eyes are sharp. It doesn’t matter how out of focus the rest of your image is, if the eyes are sharp the image will appear to be in focus. Having the eyes in focus will also help draw the viewer into the image.
  • Try to use natural light. Using flash will give harsh results and likely just scare away your subject. If your inside, shoot near a window. If your outside, trying shooting on a cloudy day for soft even light, or near sunrise/sunset for more dramatic light.
  • Be patient. It may take some time and many shots before you end up with something you like.

You’re absolutely right about foregoing flash. I’ve only used flash once with my cat. That was four months ago, and I’m still in the process of desensitizing her to the camera. For weeks, she would run away at the sight of it. Now, she’ll sit and watch until I raise it. I figure two more months and we’ll be good to go.

Want! Nice shots. Was it difficult to get an adorable shot? I assume dogs are easier to work with than cats as they want attention, or does it depend on the temperament of the animal?
