From Canmore follow the directions in town towards the ‘Nordic Center‘. Continue on around the reservoir and dam until you reach the ‘Goat Creek‘ trailhead parking lot. This is the same parking lot you would use for ‘Ha Ling Peak‘. Once parked, walk back up the road towards the town a few hundred meters and you will see some telephone poles on your left; begin your climb here.

  • Food
  • Water
  • Warm ski jacket
  • Warm fleece
  • Winter Hiking boots
  • Warm socks (or 2 layers of socks)
  • Goggles (extremely helpful once you break the tree line)
  • Poles
  • Toque
  • Neck/face warmer
  • Thermal underwear
  • Snow-pants or gaiters
  • 2 layers of gloves
  • Hand warmers

With the recent snowfall, the trail was not visible from the road, so we just started up from where we could best remember. We had done this particular hike a few times before so it wasn’t long before we across the trail. Despite the cold temperatures, we had to start shedding layers as there was little wind in trees. Viability gradually worsened as we climbed until we broke through the tree line and visibility dropped to just 40 or 50 meters. With the decreased visibility came much higher winds and we decided to stop and cover our faces and eyes the best we could. Jimmy’s eyes literally started to freeze shut; the wind was cold.

We did our best to follow the ridge up the right hand side, hoping to see the large rock formation that comes just before the summit.

At this point we were starting to lose motivation as visibility was so low.  We were having trouble determining how much further it was to the top. We decided to stop in a somewhat sheltered area of the ridge and have some food and water.

After a bite to eat we packed up and made the decision that we would head back down after taking some pictures. We trekked up a maybe another 100 meters or so as we took pictures along the way.

Just then, the peak of the mountain finally came into view.

We were only about 75 meters from the summit, far closer then we thought. Despite realizing how close we were, we still made the difficult decision to head back down as it was unsafe with the current conditions to attempt the final ridge.

Thank you for reading my post today. I do envy you guys living in or around Canmore. I used to live in Banff and Cochrane many years ago. When I was a kid I worked summers on a ranch near Cochrane, and during bad weather days the rancher and I would go camping by the reservoir by spray lakes. Keep hiking and writing, both are good for the soul.
    PS. your pictures are great

What a great site, Patrick. I’m a bit jealous of the hiking – there is a part of me that has always wanted to be a serious hiker, but another part that get’s dizzy at heights; besides, my knees are too old. But now I have the perfect vicarious life – I can just come to your site and see all those majestic sites through your eyes. Great photography! And many thanks for following my flat lander blog. 🙂

After viewing the outright priviledged connection to Mother Nature’s soulful kinship with humaity , (meaning on film but the photographer new exactly how to strike the viewer’s awe out of whack with his/her talent) I never want another vantage point much different from the photagphers. I want to swindle mayors and judges etc. to knock down cities and plant a tree per person. Very nice. Enchanting. I’m going to indulge in some black gold.

You captured such beauty my mouth was hanging open looking at your pictures. Thank you for following my blog. I guess it couldn’t be much different from yours. Did you feel the need for some urban grunge to counter all of that Canadian magnificence? I think i will follow yours. Partly for the beauty, but really for your eye. I think it is important not to confuse the photographer with his/her subject.

I couldn´t live any further from those rocks and lakes and squirrels than I do now. Neither have I ever been a big fan of hiking or God forbid climbing (I´m a sea-side kind of girl: born in flatlands, fond of gently – very gently – rolling hills only). But your pictures are so stunningly beautiful and the people in them look so exhilaratingly, madly happy that I am actually considering giving it a go. Not in winter, though:) And only in Bavaria – Berlin might have everything you might wish for but for rocks, mountain trails and glaciers:)
Great blog! Glad I visited it.
