West Coast Trail

Distance: 75km

Total Time: 101 hours

Participants: Patrick Latter, Jimmy Quigley, Carlyn Stilling, Michelle Wong

Background Information on the Trail: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Coast_Trail

We arrived in Port Renfrew on Sunday and camped in a nearby campground for the night. It was right on the beach and had a great view of the bay.

The next day we made our way to the orientation office, which is just a short drive/walk from the campground. We met the other hikers that were starting that morning in the small building. On the wall they had the number of evacuations to date for the year.

When we reached the office at the end of trail in Bamfield 4 days later this number had already climbed to 53. After the orientation, we started to get our gear together before the boat takes you across the small channel to the trail head. We brought 36 Cliff bars for snacks…. we should have brought 72.

Once on the trail it didn’t take long until we reached our first ladder. There are as many as 70 ladders, 130 bridges and 4 cable cars on the trail. The ladders seemed fun at first but you soon began to dread seeing them.

We reached the first camp site 5km and 4 hours into the trail. Although it was only 1pm, we decided to stay at ‘Thrashers Cove” because with the current state of the tides we would have to wait until morning to make it to the sea caves safely. After setting up camp we spent the next few hours exploring the beach and surrounding area. There was a large bird in the area that would circle above and occasionally skim the water looking for food.

There was a fantastic sunset that night on the beach and it would be our last of the trip, as we spent the next 4 days in permanent overcast skies and fog.

The next morning we made our way over giant boulders and huge pieces of drift wood along the coast. We learned quickly to never step on the brown spots on the rocks as the brown algae was extremely slippery. We made it just in time to the sea caves to still make it through before the tide came up too high.

Along the coast the low tide exposed many isolated mini islands that towered above us as we walked by.

We came across our first waterfall that day as well.  It was only 50 meters from the shore, right on the beach.
We stopped for lunch just after this in a small isolated bay. Any food that we brought that wasn’t a snack was a dehydrated meal. To cook them we would boil water over a small camping stove and then pour the specified amount in the bag and wait 13 minutes. While they can taste a little salty they are actually some of the best food I’ve had camping. Jimmy nearly cooked his shame while trying to light the stove.

While hiking in the interior parts of the trail can beautiful, the natural mudbogs and winding path can make it very slow going. The second you did not give the trail 100% of your attention was when you fell. At one point Michelle fell completely forward and with the weight of her back pack, she couldn’t even get up.  Luckily for her, Carlyn was right behind and saved her from drowning face down in a mud bog.

I did not know what hunger was until doing the west coast trail. We arrived at our camp site late that night and all four of us were starving to the point that Carlyn was shaking coming down the last set of ladders. We decided to make one of the large pastas we had brought and the ‘Wicked Awesome Brownies’ dehydrated meal. We had not read the directions in the store.  After reading the brownie package, it turned out that after pouring the water in, we had to ‘Upper Bake’ them….. Upper bake?!?! What is that? So…. we just ate the brownie mix… and it was AMAZING.

The next day we did our first cable car as we left the camp-site. Each car seats two and your momentum carries you 2/3rds of the way, while you use the rope to take the remaining distance.

While walking along the coast we spotted a Bald Eagle perched on rock right near the water. I managed to get pretty close before startling him.

Once we reached our camp site for the night, we setup our tents and I walked down the beach with Jimmy to take some photos. The fog was especially dense that night, and the longer we got into our walk the darker and more eerie it became. At one point we thought something was running towards us.. turns out it was just a bear shaped log.

At some points in the trail there would be rope left over from other hikers used to repel down rock faces.

For lunch that day we made it to the crab shack that is run by the same guy that does the ferry crossing needed for one section of the trail. While it was expensive, it was probably the best meal of crab I have ever had. They even had a small puppy that played with us while we waited for our food.

The crab was caught fresh and cooked right in front of you.

We barely made it to the famous ‘Hole in the wall’ before the tide became too high and we would have to cut through the interior instead.

We reached our final camp-site of the trip just as the sun was going down. This was the quietest site we had been to the whole trip, with only one other group of kayakers sharing the beach with us. We had a small fire with the drift wood that was nearby before going to bed.

While most the trip we had only seen dead crabs, this last stretch of coast had TONS of live crabs running around. One in particular wanted to fight Jimmy.

All accesses to the beach were marked by brightly coloured buoys that were hung on the trees.

We finished the trail in just over 4 days at 101 hours. Normally, you take a bus back from Bamfield to Port Renfrew where your car is parked but we had not reserved a spot and the bus was full. We found out there was also a guy that takes people by boat. While this was a little more expensive, it was definitely worth it, as we got to see the trail from a unique perspective. He also took us right up to the sea lion colonies and whales.

Awesome, beautiful photos! Man, shots like this really make me long for more nature in my life. Used to get it all the time but then I moved to Los Angeles and decided to settle in the city areas.

Know of any great day hikes out this way appropriate for kiddos?

    • a2canadian September 4, 2012 at 8:37 pm - Reply

I lived in LA for 4 years and found that the best nearby day hikes are in Malibu. I especially recommend Will Rogers State Park and Topanga State Park. Just take Sunset Blvd. West and hit any of the clearly marked trailheads north of Sunset or the PCH.

Patrick. You are doing some awesome photography. We too went camping when I was younger. Kind of enjoyed it too. But one year it came to an abrupt halt. We went camping that time in the Alberta Peace River District. We were roughing it in a tent and It rained for four days straight. We had four little children with us and my wife was not amused. She swore that she never would go camping again. And she didn’t either. That brought my camping days to an end as well. Still have some fond memories though. As for the four little kids? They still go camping with their families.

What a fantastic trip and what wonderful photographs. I have linked to you today from soulsnet.com and shared one of your fab photos. I hope that’s ok. Thanks for visiting and liking soulsnet and now I have found you. I write a daily inspiration blog at soulsnet and use one of my own amateurish photos and then try to find a fabulous photograph to share from a real photographer, ie YOU!!.

Would it be ok for me to use some more of your photos sometimes in the future? Today’s post at soulsnet is about overcoming worry, but you don’t seem the sort of guy who would be too much of a worrier to me.

Really enjoyed your post and hope we meet again here or at soulsnet.

Great photos and stories. I remember on Outward Bound years ago I fell forward and the top of my pack got stuck in the mud and I couldn’t get unstuck without help – I was stuck as a “human arch.” I remember when I was solo-hiking the Colorado Trail, I almost couldn’t get up by myself with my pack clocking in at 80 lbs. I always sat down next to a rock or tree so I could hoist myself up. You folks look like you are having so much fun and those beach shots you took are absolutely HEAVENLY. Makes me want to go there. Thanks for sharing!

Looks like you have enough comments here already but, as always, fantastic post. This is one of my favorite weblogs. No matter what I’m doing, whenever I see the photos of your most recent hiking forays it makes me want to stop whatever I’m doing and go hiking in Canada. Looking forward to the next installment… Please go on another trip soon!

Now I wanna go hiking in Canada! So many photos I loved here – the rocks in the sunset on your first night. I like that discovery about not stepping on the slippery bits – all those observations, along with the photos, really bring this trip alive. When you talked about the crabs it made me remember when I was living on a beach in Mexico and every night they’d be coming up to the surface underneath me, scratching away at my tent. Look forward to seeing/reading more of your adventures.

You’ll probably never get round to reading this comment … there are so many in the queue and they all say what I would say, and more. Let it suffice then to thank you for the like at my blog (Pairodox Farm). Positive feedback from someone of your skill and talent really means something extra special. I am quite a bit older than you and envy the time of life that you are experiencing – how exciting. Sometimes I wish I could go back and live a life such as yours. Enjoy it – you seem to be doing so. Your images are wonderful – I know you’ve heard that from many others. You’ve got a good eye and the technical stuff to capture what you see. Keep it up. I also appreciate the credit you’ve given the fellow who has posted all of the photoshop tutorials – although I don’t use photoshop (I’m using GIMP right now) I’ll assume many of the routines are similar. I’m not sure where I stand on post-processing but a bit, here and there, is always nice to tweek great photos just a bit. Anyway, I think your stuff is great. You are motivational. Keep it up and enjoy the life you lead … you seem to be having a really good time and have got some really good friends with which to share it all. D

I applaud the incredible journey while I never even left the couch! ;D It’s wonderful that people like you and the others you shared the trail with can take the initiative of such a hugely tiring trip. We need more people who can do that, rather than sit in front of the TV and gain weight. Really, just terrific.

    Hey Patrick!!!

    What a gorgeous photo-diary!
It seems to me as the perfect blend of landscape and action within the story of its protagonists.
I felt like a comfortable member of the expedition, and this is (for me) the bigger achievement a photo or a series of photos can convey. My very most sincere congratulations.

    I have one question though:

How did you manage to carry all these weight?
    a 400mm f5.6 – almost 1.3 Kg + a 17-40mm f4 – almost half a Kg + a 35mm f1.4 – around 0.6 Kg + a 50mm 1.2 – another 0.6 Kg and a canon 5d III – around 1 Kg (with battery)
These only, without extra batteries, filters or tripod are 4Kg.
Did you share the stuff with your companion travelers?
    Where you on spinach?
I am really intrigued… hi hi hi

    all good

      Thanks!

I buy all my hiking gear with extreme ultralight in mind. I definitely lose a lot of comfort/luxury items but the extra camera gear I can bring is more than worth it. My hiking companions were very good about it and carried the majority of the food as well.

Oh my gosh you have a million comments…LOL. Just looking at your lovely photos again and noticed you don’t have a water mark or copyright mark with your name on them. It’s just a suggestion, but your work is so amazing that I’m sure you wouldn’t want anyone else to copy (if that’s even possible on here… I am still too new to know). I do know lots of pictures just float around and people use them without having a clue as to who took them. some of these would be great for brochures, books etc, which I’m sure you probably already do. Just thought I’d come back and put in my 2 cents worth… 😀

But what are Cliff bars? Are they so good?

Cliff bars are a protein bar. They have different flavors. My daughter swears by them for a good snack to last a while. They are perfect for hikes. I prefer Odwalla bars, same philosophy. Google them.

Thank you for following my blog. I really liked scrolling all of these pictures but I think my favorites are the waterfall, the boulders in the water and the eagle about to take off on the tip of his talons.

I don’t know where to start – OK, thank you for following my humble blog – now, this is amazingly good. You’ve told a complete story with words & photos – I on;y wanted a map to see where you were but I can do that. It’s hard to say what photos I like best – I chuckled at the outset – “right on the beach with a great view of the bay” – the very dark picture, but you can see that’s what it is – similarly, those bear-shaped bumps on the beach. The brownie photo – the truly haunting fog photo with trees in center – the cormorants – the crab – it’s all great – thank you!

Absolutely beautiful photography! I’ve never done the West Coast trail myself but i believe my dad has done it three times, or four. I’ll have to ask him again. The first time he did it he was in his sixties and the oldest of the group that went. He’s 75 years old now and did it the last time about two or three years ago. I don’t know if he’ll ever do it again now but he loved it.

Thanks for the “like”, it’s so interesting to see who finds my blog. I grew up in Washington State, you pictures brought back memories of my childhood and trips to the coast. If I can suggest a good read – “Wild” is awesome, woman’s journey up the Pacific Coast Trail in the US.

I would love to go hiking and cooking with you guys. My next best thing after cooking is being part of nature. All those fantastic shots just makes me very happy to enjoy here in Cape Breton. My first stop in Canada was the West Coast and it is still amazing. However Cape Breton has so much to offer too, especially the coldwater Lobsters:) Go figure I settled here. Keep on hiking and shooting those great pics.

Your photographs are so beautiful. I especially love the plank trails and coastal images. I bicycled through the Canadian Rockies many years ago, my only trip that far north. If it weren’t so chilly in Canada, I’d consider relocating. You have such huge and lovely landscapes. Your images make that so clear. Thanks 🙂

I don’t know if I can say anything that would add to the abundance of comments you have here. I will just add that I live out here, and we have the finest scenery known to mankind, and you DID do it justice! Great eye, great photos! I like that they appear more natural than the over-shopped stuff I’ve been seeing so much of lately. I like art, and I like photography. A great photo doesn’t need to be enhanced to death. Just use the equipment to showcase what’s already there. That being said, fabulous work! the one of the rocks that look like tracks are in them with the island/trees in the background in the sea remind me a lot of Coos Bay- Sunset Beach. Is that where that was taken? Sure brings back memories! I spent ten years there, and now live north of Portland.

What GREAT pictures! The trail looks exactly the same as when I did it on my 40th birthday so many years ago… right down to the mud. Thank you so much. I want my husband to do the trail too but I will NEVER show him the pictures beforehand! I loved the ladders. All of them. I was happy to start at the north end with the easiest trail and the heaviest pack. When the trail deteriorated at the south end and my pack was light. I was a happy camper hiking with a tarp, not a tent, which worked really well in many configurations including as a kitchen windbreak one windy morning.

I enjoy the big bird skimming the water, good amount of movement though the motion is frozen, as it brings the notion of ‘skimming the water’ to life. The long exposure of a wave receeding on the beach as well; the tree stump in the image following it is eerie, petrified looking.

what time of year did you go?
