Vermilion Lakes

Directions

Vermilion Lakes is a short 5 minute drive NW of Banff. Take Mount Norquay Rd from downtown towards Highway 1. Then turn left at Vermilion Lakes Drive.

Story

This is another older photo but I thought I would share it on here. I had the idea for this for sometime but could never find the right location. One day while driving down by the vermilion lakes with my brother, I finally saw the perfect area for it. It tookΒ probablyΒ 10-15 tries of my brother walking down the dock at varying speeds. In the end what worked best was having him take one step every 10 seconds and then wait 5 seconds between steps. Β There is no Photoshop trickery in this image, other then the black and white conversion. This was also shot right at dusk to allow for longer exposures.

Beautiful photos. I lived in Colorado for 10 years up in the mountains at 8,000 feet. Hiking and the snow is one thing I really miss about it. Your photos are bringing up all kinds of memories. Thanks! I shared your blog on my Facebook art page (Oviedo Style) so more people can enjoy these photos.

There is so much to absorb here, the smaller details are as important as the larger ones. I really like the texture of the wooden posts, for example. Also, I’m waiting for your brother to take one more step, which to my eye, would land him right in the water/snow/mist…

Wonderful photography…I love black and white, in particular. Do you ever use “real” film? I find using standard b&w film with a red filter produces brilliant contrast, resulting in something similar to the result you got through photoshop. Maybe I’m just nostalgic for darkrooms and winding film canisters πŸ™‚
