Larch Valley

Directions

Take Highway 1 from Calgary and turn left at the Lake Louise exit. Then follows the signs for Moraine Lake. The trail head is on the right hand side of the lake.

Background

I took theses photos last year in the Fall on the beautiful Larch Valley hike. It is an easy hike with little elevation gain and amazing views of the Larch Trees. The Larch tree, unlike most coniferous trees, has needles that turn yellow in the Autumn and then fall to the ground. With so many larch trees in the area, the floor of larch valley turns a brilliant yellow.

Thanks to Sarah for putting up with the cold blowing snow for this picture! <3

O! just mention of Larch Valley. When I was decades younger we hiked Larch Valley at that special time when the tree needles change colour. And the view of the 10 Peaks. Other times the hike to the tea houses, Lake Agnes and Six Glaciers. What wonderfully blessed country. Your pictures brought me memories. Thank-you.

The B&W photo of Sarah is very nice. The hair blowing in the wind adds realism. We can see that she was cold. This is what makes a photo so good. The connection can be understand and felt by the viewer. Some of us envy you for the type of mountains you live among. Have a look at my B&W – Yosemite photos. I only wish I had more time to spend there. My son asks when are we going back. Keep taking more B&W photos and thinking about the background light. I look forward to your next outing.

These photos are beautiful! I especially love the black and white one. I love how you captured both the warmth of the climber and the harsh coldness of the mountains. Something about the combination makes the individual look vulnerable, ephemeral, and dignified.

Wow. I just love the juxtaposition of these two shots. You’ve captured two sides of the same person in an incredible fashion.
