Retro Night Basketball

Gear Used:

Some friends dressed up retro and had a game of basketball one night. The game was outside and only had one net up against the brick wall of a school. I hadn’t planned on shooting basketball, so the only lens I had with me was 50mm. It was two dark to focus so I just flipped it to manual and pre-focused to about 4 feet. To give me enough depth of field that anything with in range would be in focus, I set a smallish aperature of f7.1. I then pointed my external flash so that it was bouncing off the same wall the net was on and stood near the side of the net. The darkness created great separation of the players against the background.

    Great shots.
(although the 5th row down, It looks almost like the guy on the right with the pale coloured shorts has no shorts on at all – just an illusion with the tightness of the shorts,of course).

Fantastic set of photographs – and great tips for how you took them, especially the pre-focusing and use of bounce flash.

What a fun time retro night must have been. It looks like they all had a great time. Enjoyed the photos and would go on to say if a picture makes someone smile then the photographer had success. Missy
