Trail

This trip was back in 2011 but I did not have a blog at the time, so I thought I would post the photos and story.

There had been a HUGE snowfall that year and the recorded snow depth for Chester lake was something like 2 meters. It was so high that, at points, it was nearly covering the trail markers which were attached to tall posts.

As we made our way through the trees, we noticed that many them had this mossy fluff wrapped around their branches. So obviously the first thing you would do with something like that is….

‘Chester Lake’ is 3.6 km into the loop and once we arrived it was a little anti-climactic, as the lake was hidden under meters of snow. If you didn’t know any better, you would have just thought it was a clearing. We took a few pictures while having lunch at the ‘lake’.

A little disappointed with the view at the lake we decided to follow a trail that seemed to continue on past the lake and up a small hill. Once we made it past trees, we came across these amazing giant boulders covered in a meter of snow. The whole scene was very surreal.

On the way back to the trail head I spotted a creek that was meandering its way through the meters of snow.

    Hi Patrick,
So many beautiful images! And, wow, what a landscape up there! Thanks for sharing the “cool” pix–it’s made the last dregs of summer a little more bearable down here. BTW, have you considered using some kind of tag cloud or other quick access device for navigating on your site? Maybe you can place it closer to the top? The individual posts are rather long so its tricky finding different things and there is so much great stuff to see!!! Just my two cents (American or Canadian!) 🙂

Besides the highest point we have is our 163.63m hill. 😛 Still proud of this place I call home, but definitely no enviable hiking trails here. Keep wheels on, Patrick. You was born as photographer. You shoot as it is, and it’s makes high price of your work. Don’t do color correction as others like to do and spoil natural view. I never been in your country. I remember the descriptions of nature only from books, by Jack London. If I get a project, I’ll visit your country and you too. Maybe you should create an exhibition or you had? I like you job.

Hello! Thanks for reading my blog! I loved checking out yours, too. Your photos are stunning, particularly the photos of the beach towards the end of this post, and I love the anecdote about eating the raw brownie mix. You have inspired me to do that trail whenever I make it to Canada!

I used to visit beautiful mountain places like this. My life has changed. It is still a good life, but I may not ever again be able to visit these places. Thank you, from deep in my heart, for filling a void and bringing me joy. — Aggie (And thanks for following the Daily OOMPH! Otherwise, I would never have found you.)

I actually snowshoed there with my hubby last Valentine’s. Gotta say…my pics don’t exactly look like this. 🙂 Love your work! I’ve hiked Chester Lake in the summer as well and it’s gorgeous at that time. A little more of the view you look forward to at the end of a hike.

Your photos are all wonderful and fun to peruse. I love the Kananaskis, there’s just nothing like them–Looks like you had much better snow than we did here in Colorado last winter!

beautiful photography, you have a great eye! thanks for the armchair hike, i have fibromyalgia so couldn’t even get out of a car into snow like that, but i feel like i was there…you have a gift! in the previous post,Vancouver/Nootka Island, the shot of the buoys in the trees reminded me of the installations i make, i was looking to see who the artist was till the penny dropped! it was like being in a kim stanley robinson novel, great stuff! thanks again!

Great set of photos! I just looked at these a second time and noticed the location: Highway 1 going west from Calgary. On our way out of town during our honeymoon cross country and back camping trip (summer of 1971), we got stuck in a terrible traffic jam. Bumper to bumper we crawled until we got to the cause. High school students, on behalf of the city, were taking a one page both sides survey on “What can we do to improve the traffic conditions in our town!”
