Shambhala 2012

Shambhala is a music festival with a population of 10,000 nestled in a valley in southern BC, near the town of Salmo. It’s one my favourite places to keep coming back to and this year I had the honour of shooting on their media staff. There are far too many photos to post all of them on here so I have also included a link to the full FB album.

Full Album Of Photos: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.423456081023056.84433.423060187729312&type=1

There was often a fog that blanketed the valley in the early morning hours. This was one my favourite times to shoot.

I had arrived a few days before the festival had officially opened its gates and the normally car-packed fields were eerily quiet.

As the morning sun crept over the distant mountains, everybody is getting their vehicles ready to move from the parking lot line and into the festival.

It’s never a far walk to get away from the craziness of the festival and see some of the amazing beauty of the valley itself.

While Shambhala is primarily a music festival, what makes it so special is the incredible amount of hardwork by some amazingly talented people that goes into the art installations and stages.

If you need a break from the music, there is no shortage of things to do during the day. From morning yoga sessions held near the river to…

…hanging acrobatic classes to…

…writing a wish and placing it in the ‘Wish Tree’

While the nights can sometimes get close to freezing, the days are usually 30 degrees plus. There are always ways to keep cool even if you’re not down by the glacial fed river.

Friday marks the day that the opening ceremonies happen at the ‘Labyrinth’ stage.

Shambhala wouldn’t be Shambhala without the incredibly warm and diverse people that call it home for that one weekend a year.

Not to mention the crazy costumes you see as you make your way through the festival.

What has always made the festival so special to me, are the memories made with new and old friends.

This year even included a wedding; this is the bride and her father.

The father of the bride as he looks up the staircase that led to the alter.

The bride and groom rode off in a vintage red ford fire truck.

While the festival may seem at its peak during the day, it’s at night where it really comes alive. There are 5 different stages to choose from and everything in between to experience.

How beautiful! The name, Shambhala, immediately piqued my interest because as I’m sure you know, S Shambhala was the name of a mystical, mythical(?) Tibetan Buddhist kingdom which is, for Buddhists, the equivalent of “Heaven.” I always feel so happy and ‘light’ when I think of this kingdom… Looking at your photos, of an event with the same name, made me feel wonderful, as well. Your art captures much more than the images: It conveys the cosmic energies, as well. Bravo!

Can only agree with all my previous commentators! Was wondering about one thing: first picture – has it been worked at in any way in terms of Photoshop? I find my pictures, taken under these circumstances utterly boring hence haven’t been taking pictures unless the weather is more or less bright and sunny. But others always look amazing ….

Wow–looks like Burning Man before tickets started selling at $5,000 on eBay… Also reminds me of some of the better Goa raves in the late 90’s and perhaps even Ibiza in the next decade. I’m tapping the keyboard to the sounds of FatBoy Slim as I write. This puts me in a very good mood indeed, thank you.

Sadly, because I’m a conspiracy theorist, I will not be able to check out the broader collection on Facebook (never was, never will be on Facebook). But I can now dream for a while and you have opened the door to dreaming, on this particular occasion.

Thank you both for supporting my modest blog and for sharing your transcendental work.

    Dear Patrick,

I have been following your art for a few months and always impressed at both your artistic eye and technical skill. I love taking pictures, but there is a lot I would love to learn. I don’t know what you do outside of taking pictures, but would you consider holding something like a photobootcamp. Not free of course. Like a weekend of both learning technical skills, editing, understanding how to get what you want to get from pictures. If I was to learn from someone, I would prefer it to be someone I think is really good. Thats if you don’t do something like this already. For my own selfish reasons, I really think you should do this. Expensive wedding photographers costs upwards of $7000. You could help about 14 people in one weekend….. What do you think? My pictures are at http://www.lenstherapy.zenfolio.com I need help 🙁

I did art festival for 28 years and this was a great reminder of all the good times I had. We camped at the sites or stayed at friends houses and became one. Artists, whether muscians, dancers, yogi, painters, craftsman, etc., have a bond and connection that most common people would not understand.
You’ve presented a well documented portrait of creative souls.

The Northwest is not such a bad place to meet people. N’est-ce pas? Photographer Patrick Latter truly captures the romantic and fairy tale-like moments of the music festival for his fellow bloggers. I don’t know if I should thank Mr. Latter for making me feel regretful of not knowing about Shambhala sooner. I suppose that is Mr. Latter’s talent inspiring me to seek out more adventures. Thank you Mr. Latter.

2012 was my first year. It was, to my surprise, like going home. One of the greatest experiences of my life. As a result of it I changed a LOT – personality traits to priorities. I wouldn’t miss it again for the whole world. If it’s possible to go, and you feel the call, you should listen to it. You never know what could end up in front of your lens.

On another note, are you familiar with the photography of Kyer Wiltshire? He’s done a great job of capturing festival culture also.

Hey, thanks for your photos, they are AMAZING. I actually just moved to Yellowknife from Nelson, so I know Shambhala well. Your photos made me feel right at home! And they remind me of what a special place the Kootenays is. Thanks for your photos, they are AMAZING. I’m hoping to learn how to take decent photos, but I don’t think I can aspire to this. Thanks too for stopping by my blog, as it lead me to yours!

You have taken such beautiful and quirky pictures. I think you really conveyed the spirit of the entire place in this post. Shambhala reminds me of a Northern UK festival called The Beat Herder which has a rather alternative chilled community supporting it.
