Road to Hana
Taken on the ‘Road to Hana’ in Maui. Amazing drive!

I took this on the stretch of highway that continues on past Hana and found this to be one of the most underrated parts of the island. The road was not nearly as busy as the road to Hana and the vast fields are mostly untouched other than some small ranches.
Another shot from one of the beaches that dot the coast of Wailea.
The roughly 1 hour (2 hours if you leaving from Wailea) drive from sea level, follows a winding switch back that ends at 3055 m (10,023 ft). Try to arrive at least an hour before sunrise if you want a parking spot at the upper lot. I arrived even earlier as I wanted to get some shots of the night sky.

Yes that temperature gauge is accurate, it was 47f and that’s with out the high winds. More than a 25f difference compared to beach I had left earlier that night. Remember to dress warm! You might be standing out there for up to an hour.
With the full moon that night it was easy to see in all directions while still retaining some of the night sky’s stars.

There is also a nearby observatory that almost seems like it was light with day light rather than moonlight.

The best sunrises at this altitude happen when there are low lying clouds for the sun the highlight.

This was taken along a stretch of the Wailea Sea Wall. I’ve always loved interesting looking trees that are isolated like this one.
Shot at 17mm at F16 with a shutter speed of 1/40s and iso 100. This is cropped from a larger photo, so I would say the focal length probably ended up being closer to 28mm.

I will be traveling to Maui on November 23rd and will be there for 10 days with the main focus being hiking and photography. I would love some suggestions from any of my followers who live there for photo locations and hikes. What are the most famous locations and are there any that are off the beaten path that may not be so easy access? I will have a rental car but will a 4wd vehicle be needed for some locations? Thanks in advance!
