Calgary Skyline II

Panorama Photography Tips

Gear Used:

This is 7 shots stitched together in portrait orientation using Photoshop. Shot at 70mm, f/11, 1/20s, and iso 100. With overlapping and cropping that works out to be about 68 megapixels for the final image.

I don’t normally link to higher resolution copies of my photos, but it’s difficult to see a panorama of this size at lower resolutions.

These are some crops of the image that show just how much detail is in the photo.

Vermilion Lakes IV

January 14, 2013 at 10:42 pm

Directions

Vermilion Lakes is a short 5 minute drive NW of Banff. Take Mount Norquay Rd from downtown towards Highway 1. Then turn left at Vermilion Lakes Drive.

Story

A very cold sunset at Vermilion Lakes this past weekend. The lake is entirely frozen except for a few sections with moving water from nearby creeks.

Maui II

December 13, 2012 at 9:32 pm

Background

I took this on the stretch of highway that continues on past Hana and found this to be one of the most underrated parts of the island. The road was not nearly as busy as the road to Hana and the vast fields are mostly untouched other than some small ranches.

Another shot from one of the beaches that dot the coast of Wailea.

Wailea Sea Wall, Maui

December 4, 2012 at 8:08 pm

Story

This was taken along a stretch of the Wailea Sea Wall. I’ve always loved interesting looking trees that are isolated like this one.

Shot at 17mm at F16 with a shutter speed of 1/40s and iso 100. This is cropped from a larger photo, so I would say the focal length probably ended up being closer to 28mm.

Story

I just arrived back from my trip to Maui and this is a small preview of what’s to come. This photograph is from one of the many small beaches that line the west side of the island towards Lahaina

Great Blue Heron

For all of my bird/wildlife photography I use a 400mm F5.6. I prefer it to the 100-400 because it’s sharper while being smaller and lighter with better auto focus. I aim to use a shutter speed of at least 1/800 to ensure as little motion blur as possible. Make sure your camera’s autofocus is set to continuous; for Canon this is ‘AI Servo’. If you can, try to shoot around sunset/sunrise for more interesting light.
